‘Punching Out Parkinson’s’

Mother of Sorrows Church’s “Boomers and Beyond” series will feature Fit 4 Boxing Club General Manager Brett Burkhart on April 9.

Burkhart will discuss how the gym’s boxing program has helped improve symptoms and slow the progression in people affected by Parkinson’s disease and other neurological disorders. Since opening nine years ago, the gym has worked with more than 700 participants at its two locations.

Those in attendance can also learn about how non-contact boxing classes hold benefits for seniors, young adults and children.

The program will be at noon. There is no cost to attend. Participants can bring a bag lunch and a friend.

The church is at 4202 Old William Penn Highway in Murrysville.

Used book sale donations

The Murrysville Community Library and local branch of the American Association of University Women will host their annual used book sale April 25-27, and are collecting donations for the sale.

Gently used books, particularly for children, can be brought to the library through April 23, along with teen and adult fiction and non-fiction books, and jigsaw puzzles.

Encyclopedias, manuals, textbooks and musty or moldy books will not be accepted.

Oil and gas workshop

Citizen group Protect PT will host an April 6 community workshop for residents living near various types of oil and gas infrastructure.

The meeting will be at 11 a.m. in the Murrysville Community Center at 3091 Carson Avenue.

Topics will include complaint and compliance issues, emergency preparedness, air and water pollution, oil and gas waste, noise, impacts, pipelines and more. A light lunch will be provided, and attendees will receive a home resource guide and a demonstration of how to make an economical air filter for homes or small work spaces. One air filter will be given away to a workshop participant.

Moon painter at ESAL meeting

Moon Township artist Rita Wilson will be the featured speaker at the April 4 East Suburban Artists League meeting.

Wilson will share examples of her work, and take a close look at the same subject painted in two different ways.

The meeting will be at 6:45 p.m. at Christ’s Lutheran Church, 5330 Old Logan Ferry Road in Murrysville.

FRAA Competitive Cheer tryouts

The Franklin Regional Athletic Association will host tryouts for its Competitive Cheer program from 5:30-8 p.m. April 11 for students in grades 3-6.

Mandatory practices will take place prior to tryouts from 5-8 p.m. April 8 and 10. Registration is open through April 4.

All events will be held in the gym at Newlonsburg Presbyterian Church, 4600 Old William Penn Highway in Murrysville.

Gateway Ice Hockey free skate

The Gateway Ice Hockey Club will hold a free skate from 6:30-7:20 p.m. May 5 at Palmer Imaging Arena just outside Delmont.

Anyone in kindergarten through 12th grade interested in playing ice hockey for Gateway and meeting current players and coaches is invited.

Rental skates are available and no playing experience is necessary.

The arena is at 100 Center Ice Drive in Salem.

Murrysville library events

• April 6: Peter Rabbit will visit the library at 11 a.m. Ann Troxell from the Beatrix Potter Society will read “The Tale of Peter Rabbit” and share some rabbit-related coloring activities and treats. Geared toward preschool students, but all children are welcome to attend. Register by calling 724-327-1102.

• April 8: Chair yoga for grief, 10 a.m. Participants will be guided in recognizing what’s happening in their bodies and minds and using techniques to work with those sensations and support the grieving process.

• April 11: iPhone basics, 2-4 p.m. Learn the different features available on iPhones. Participants are asked to bring their iPhone username and password.

• April 22: Android smartphone basics, 2-4 p.m. Learn the different features available on Android smartphones like the Samsung Galaxy, Motorola Edge and Razr, Google Pixel and OnePlus.

• May 13: Tech Q&A session, 10 a.m. to noon. Participants can bring their smartphone, table or laptop and learn about some of the “tech” terms you may hear daily.

National Day of Prayer

The 73rd National Day of Prayer will be celebrated at 7 p.m. May 2 at the Delmont Fire Hall, 2360 Route 66 in Delmont. This year’s gathering is based on the Bible scriptures taken from 2 Samuel 22: 29-31.

• April 20: The Great Puzzle Race, 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Teams of 1-3 people will have a two-hour time limit to complete as many 300-piece puzzles as possible. Registration required.

• April 24 and May 11: Learn how to navigate using Windows 11, Microsoft’s latest operating system, 1-3 p.m. Bring your own laptop and power supply. Registration is required.

Woman’s club scholarships

The Murrysville Woman’s Club is offering at least three non-traditional, $3,000 scholarships for women from Westmoreland County, 21 and older, who are currently enrolled in college or can provide proof of acceptance.

The club has awarded scholarships for four decades to women seeking education and job training.

Applications are available at Seton Hill University in Greensburg, Westmoreland County Community College campuses in Youngwood and Murrysville, and the University of Pittsburgh at Greensburg, along with the Murrysville, Delmont, Greensburg, Hempfield and New Kensington libraries.

The application deadline is April 20.
