Cooper sworn in as state rep

Jill Cooper of Murrysville was sworn in Jan. 3 as the 55th District state representative.

Cooper grew up in neighboring Plum, graduated from Grove City College and worked as vice president of sales and marketing for Alcoa Corp. before stepping away from the business world to raise her family. During that time, she remained active in organizations including the Franklin Regional Adult School, Murrysville Economic & Community Development Corp., the Murrysville Community Library and others.

Cooper is one of 48 freshmen lawmakers sworn in as part of the 207th session of the General Assembly.

The 55th District includes Murrysville, Export, Delmont, Avonmore, New Alexandria, Oklahoma, Salem, Upper Burrell, Washington, Bell, Loyalhanna, Arnold, New Kensington, and parts of Lower Burrell and Derry Township.

Comedy night benefits Canes baseball team

Jim Krenn will be featured at a comedy fundraiser for the Canes Pennsylvania Baseball 12U team.

It will be held at 7 p.m. Jan 14 at the Murrysville Community Center, 3091 Carson Ave. Tickets are $50 and include beer, appetizers and a chance to win door prizes. A cash bar will be available along with raffles and a 50/50 drawing.

Speaker series welcomes Immaculate Conception pastor

The Mother of Sorrows “Boomers & Beyond” speaker series will feature the Rev. John Moineau, pastor at Immaculate Conception Parish in Irwin, Jan. 10 at noon.

Moineau will present “The Five Stages of Acceptance of the Cross vs. The Five Stages of Grief.”

There is no cost to attend. Participants are asked to bring a bag lunch. Beverages will be provided.

The church is at 4202 Old William Penn Highway in Murrysville.

AAUW speaker will compare, contrast Spanish flu, covid-19 pandemics

The American Association of University Women in Murrysville will feature former Westmoreland County Community College sociology and anthropology professor Thomas Soltis as its Jan. 12 guest speaker.

Soltis will discuss the similarities between the Spanish flu and covid-19 pandemics. He is the author of “An Unwelcome Visit from the Spanish Lady: The 1918 Influenza Pandemic in Western Pennsylvania.”

The presentation will be at 10 a.m. at the Murrysville library’s TechNook. There is no cost to attend.

Drug and alcohol program at Murrysville library

Gateway Rehab Community Relations Coordinator Cat Miceli will host an educational program on drug and alcohol use and abuse at noon, Jan. 11 at the Murrysville Community Library.

Miceli’s talk will cover topics of addiction, substance use and misuse, vaping and marijuana use among adolescents, opioids and fentanyl and the impact drug use has on families and the community.

There is no cost to attend, but registration is required at MurrysvilleLibrary.org by clicking on the “Events Calendar” link or calling 724-327-1102.

Murrysville mayor seeks reelection

Murrysville Mayor Regis Synan announced his intent to seek a new term as mayor in the 2023 municipal elections.

Synan, who is president at Pittsburgh manufacturing company F. Tinker & Sons, has served two terms as mayor.

“We live in a very active community, and I want to keep Murrysville a healthy, friendly and safe place for families to call home,” Synan said. “I’m humbled and honored to serve our community.”

Association of University People meetings

The Association of University People’s club for single college graduates will host four dinners in November:

• Jan. 10, 12:30 p.m. at Chengdu Gourmet, 5840 Forward Ave., in Pittsburgh’s Squirrel Hill neighborhood.

• Jan. 25, 6 p.m. at Amels Restaurant, 435 McNeilly Rd., in Castle Shannon.

Tree recycling after the holidays

Westmoreland Cleanways and Recycling will once again parter with the Murrysville-Export Rotary to provide a place for Christmas tree recycling.

Trees can be brought to the Windstream parking lot west of the new Market District on Old William Penn Highway from 9 a.m to 1 p.m. Jan. 7 and 14. Donations will be accepted.

Cornhole tournament to benefit FR softball

A cornhole tournament in Delmont will benefit the Franklin Regional Lady Panthers softball team.

It will be held at 6 p.m. Jan. 28 at St. John Baptist de La Salle’s banquet hall, 497 Athena Drive. Two-player teams will compete in a double-elimination tournament. There is a 64-team limit. The cost is $80 per team, and $25 for spectators.

The event will include food and beverages, a silent auction and a 50/50 raffle. For more email twoehler40@gmail.com.
