FR inducts 2024 Athletic Hall of Fame Class

Franklin Regional welcomed back former athlete alumni to be inducted into its Athletic Hall of Fame Class of 2024 on Sept. 27.

This year’s class included the 1951 baseball team; the PIAA AAA Championship 2005 football team; current school record-holder in discus and 2003 PIAA gold discus champion Andrew Cohen (A’04); two-time county cross country champion, two-time WPIAL medalist and two-time PIAA medalist Brian Grimm (A’84); four-time section wrestling champion, four-time WPIAL runner-up and 2013 PIAA Champion Tyler Smith (A’14); two-time WPIAL girls’ basketball champion and PIAA champion Pam Miklasevich; WPIAL and PIAA champion and multi-time medalist Gay Eyles Stock (A’77); and contributor, longtime athletic office volunteer and 23-year school board member Herb Yingling (A’68).

Halloween events

• The Export Halloween Parade will take place at 7 p.m. Oct. 25.

Paradegoers will ine up at the Export Volunteer Fire Department, 5821 Washington Ave. Registration opens at 5 p.m.

• Trick-or-treating will take place at the same time all three Star-area towns, from 6-8 p.m. Oct. 31.

Fall festival

Newlonsburg Presbyterian Church will host its annual community fall festival from 3-4:30 p.m. Oct. 20.

The free event will include games for children and adults, a trunk-or-treat event (children are invited to wear costumes), pumpkin carving and decorating and dessert from the Kona Ice Truck.

It will take place in the parking lot at the church, 4600 Old William Penn Highway in Murrysville.

Symphony East performance

Musicians from Duquesne University’s Mary Pappert School of Music will present an Oct. 21 program in Salem.

It will be at 1 p.m. at The Lamplighter, 6566 William Penn Highway in Salem. The program is open to the public and reservations are not required. The cost is $10 for adults.

FR band fruit sale fundraiser

The Franklin Regional Panther Marching Band will hold its annual fruit sale fundraiser through Nov. 5.

Orders can be placed at FreshFruitOrder.org/FRBand, and delivery will take place Dec. 7. Orders can also be placed with any band or band front member.

All proceeds will support band education, equipment and student trips.

‘Howl-O-Ween’ party

Walkers Pet Ho-Tail in Murrysville will host its 18th annual “Howl-O-Ween” party at 5:30 p.m. Oct. 26. It will be at 4603 William Penn Highway in Murrysville. An Oct. 27 party will take place at the same time in the North Versailles location at 1751 Lincoln Highway.

There is no cost to attend, however a donation is suggested for those taking fall pet photos. Proceeds benefit local animal shelters. The event will include trick-or-treating, a costume contest, games, raffle baskets and vendors.

Association of University People meet-up

The Association of University People invites singles age 50 and older, who are 4-year college graduates, to join them for activities, trips, monthly dinners and concerts.

Paint-and-play event

Newlonsburg Presbyterian Church will host a “paint-and-play” event for children in kindergarten through eighth grade on Nov. 1 (Franklin Regional students do not have school).

It will be from 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at the church, 4600 Old William Penn Highway in Murrysville and will include open gym time, a pottery painting activity and a short devotional.

The cost is $35. Participants must bring a lunch. Registration is required by calling 724-327-0061.

‘Wreaths Across America’

Members of Trail Life USA Troop 2417 are accepting sponsorships for wreaths to be laid on veterans’ graves at Murrysville Cemetery during National Wreaths Across America Day, which is Dec. 14.

‘Great Pumpkin’ story time

The Delmont Library will host a reading of “The Great Pumpkin” at 11 a.m. Oct. 26.

Following the reading, children will receive a small pumpkin and a treat to take home, and can take a chance to win a large pumpkin.

The event is for children ages 3-10, with a limit of 10. Register online at DelmontLibrary.org.

‘Chem in a Flash’

The Murrysville Recreation Department will host Mad Science’s “Chem in a Flash” program on Nov. 12 for children in kindergarten through fifth grade.

It will be from 9 a.m. to noon in the Murrysville Community Center at 3091 Carson Avenue. Participants will see a variety of chemical reactions and have a chance to perform some hands-on experiments. The cost is $45.

Veteran breakfast

An Oct. 19 veteran appreciation breakfast will take place at The Lamplighter. It will be from 8:30-10:30 a.m. at the restaurant, 6566 William Penn Highway in Salem. The breakfast is open to all veterans who live in the 55th Legislative District.

Art show set for Oct. 25

The Murrysville Woman’s Club art show will take place from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Oct. 25 at Redstone Highlands in Murrysville. This year’s judge is Jeffrey Rouse, owner of New Growth Gallery in New Alexandria.

Moms in Prayer group

The Murrysville chapter of Moms in Prayer will begin its 2024-25 regular meetings at Murrysville First Presbyterian Church.

Meetings take place weekly at 1:15 p.m. on Thursdays in the church’s parlor, 3202 North Hills Road in Murrysville.

Women of all faith denominations are invited to pray for children, grandchildren and other relatives and their schools.
