Speaker session will focus on Fred Rogers Center

Anita Cohen will discuss the work done by the Fred Rogers Center at Saint Vincent College at the next “Boomers & Beyond” speaker series on Aug. 9.

Cohen will talk about the how the center builds connections with the goal of contributing to the positive development of young people. It will be at the Mother of Sorrows Church social hall, 4202 Old William Penn Highway in Murrysville.

It will be at 11:30 a.m., with the presentation starting at noon. There is no cost to attend, and participants can bring a bag lunch. Beverages are provided.

Gardening classes in Murrysville

The Murrysville Community Library will partner with the Murrysville Garden Club for a series focused on all-season gardening.

It will begin at 6:30 p.m. Aug. 9, with Rebecca Griffiths of Shadowwood Gardens talking about how to plant a fall garden, and will continue on Aug. 22, Sept. 6, Sept. 20 and Oct. 4.

There is no cost to attend, but registration is required by going to MurrysvilleLibrary.org and clicking on “Events Calendar.”

Kindergarten open house at Franklin Regional

Incoming kindergarten families in the Franklin Regional School District are invited to attend a “Rockin’ Into Kindergarten” program and open house at 6 p.m. Aug. 18 at the district’s primary school, 4121 Sardis Road.

Families can tour the new school and meet teachers and classmates.

Kindergarten will also have a staggered start as the school year begins on Aug. 24-26. Families can sign up for a start date at the open house. The first full day of kindergarten for all students will be Aug. 29.

National Night Out in Murrysville

The Murrysville Police Department will host its fourth annual National Night Out event from 4-7 p.m. Aug. 2 at the public works garage, 4200 Sardis Road.

In addition to police, the event will also include members of local fire departments, Murrysville Medic One, Westmoreland County emergency services, the Murrysville Public Works Department, and a medical helicopter landing at 6:30 p.m.

Four local food trucks will also be on hand, and first responders will show their equipment and talk about the services they provide to the community.

Summer softball camp

Franklin Regional Summer Softball Camp is accepting registrations for its sessions, which will run from 9 a.m. to noon Aug. 17-18 at Murrysville Community Park.

The camp is designed for those ages 7-13 to help build skills while learning proper techniques and methods. The cost is $70 for both days. Check-in will be a half-hour prior to the start time. Water will be provided, however snacks/lunch will not.

Players should bring their own gloves, cleats, tennis shoes, bats, batting gloves, helmets and softball attire, as well as a water bottle. In case of inclement weather, the camp will be held indoors at the Franklin Regional Senior High School gym.

Peach festival set for Aug. 13

The Delmont Presbyterian Church’s annual peach festival will take place from 4-7 p.m. Aug. 13 at the church, 101 Church St. The cost is $12 for adults and $5 for children ($6 for dessert only) and includes a ham barbecue, potato salad and baked beans. Children’s menu includes a hot dog, chips and dessert (yellow cake, peaches, King’s vanilla ice cream).

Rotary Summer-fest car cruise

The Murrysville-Export Rotary Club will host its annual Summer-fest car cruise from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Aug. 27 at the Lamplighter.

There is a $10 entry fee, and the first 150 entries will receive a dash plaque. The afternoon will include food, a DJ, refreshments, auction baskets, a 50/50 drawing and raffle ticket sales to win a 1986 Chevrolet Corvette. The winning ticket will be drawn at the Rotary’s Oct. 1 Oktoberfest event.

Library will host resource fair

The Murrysville Community Library will host an Aug. 16 resource fair, “Cookies & Community,” from 5:30-7:30 p.m. at the library, 4130 Sardis Road.

Community members can stop by, help celebrate the library’s 100th anniversary and visit with area organizations and businesses that will have tables set up throughout the library.

All children who attend will receive a free book and cookie. The library is also continuing to offer free upgrades of its special-edition “Centennial” library card to all those with a current card or who apply for a new one.

Fairview Park Association to hold annual picnic

Historic Fairview Park will host its 20th annual Old Fashioned Picnic from noon to 5 p.m. Aug. 20 at the park, near the intersection of Turner Lane and Old William Penn Highway in Salem.

Families are invited to bring their own picnic basket.

Road closures for Delmont Daze

Greensburg Street in Delmont will be fully closed during the 1 p.m. parade at the borough’s Aug. 6 Delmont Daze celebration. It will be closed from First Commonwealth Bank to East Pittsburgh Street for the duration of the festival, which will be from 1-7 p.m.

There will be live music beginning at 2 p.m. from On Our Way Home and the Sweaty Already String Band, food trucks, beverages from Salem Spirits and White Valley Distillery, crafts, balloon art, face painting, a magician, antique cars and more.

It will be held at the Rose Wigfield Parklet, 27 Greensburg St.
