Free barbecue, movie for first responders, veterans

The Delmont Recreation Committee will host a free barbecue and movie night for all first responders, veterans and their families at 5 p.m., Sept. 11 at the Kepple Pavilion in Newhouse Park.

Refreshments from Yellow Bridge Brewing and White Valley Distillery will be available. At dusk, there will be a showing of the film “Miracle,” the story of the 1980 U.S. men’s Olympic hockey team. The park’s concession stand will be open for drinks, popcorn and candy.

Newhouse Park is on Newhouse Park Road, off Stotler Road in Delmont.

AAUW welcomes Flight 93 memorial director

The Murrysville branch of the American Association of University Women will welcome Flight 93 National Memorial Director Superintendent Stephen Clark as its guest speaker on Sept. 9.

Clark has managed the five National Park Service units in Western Pennsylvania since 2015. During 35 years of federal service, he has served as chief of visitor protection in Washington, D.C., chief ranger for the northeastern United States, and has led and contributed to the federal response to environmental emergencies like the Mississippi Canyon oil spill and Hurricane Maria.

The meeting will be at 10 a.m., Sept. 9 in the community room at the Murrysville Community Library, 4130 Sardis Road in Murrysville. Due to covid-19 concerns, all those attending must wear a face mask. The public is invited, and there is no registration required.

‘Let’s Roll America’ event set for Sept. 12 in Delmont

Nonprofit Let’s Roll America will host a Sept. 12 event at Shield’s Farm in Delmont.

The event will run from noon to 6 p.m. It will be emceed by Wendy Bell, and will feature appearances by the band Steele and “Duck Dynasty” cast members Alan and Lisa Robertson. It will also include a tribute to those who lost their lives in the United Airlines Flight 93 crash on Sept. 11, 2001.

The afternoon will include food vendors. Attendees are asked to bring a lawn chair for seating.

Glass recycling, food pantry event scheduled

Murrysville and trash hauler Republic Services will once again partner for a glass recycling “pop-up” event from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Sept. 18.

It will be at the Veterans Field parking lot, 4200 Sardis Road in Murrysville.

All colors of glass bottles, jars and jugs will be accepted. Caps, lids and labels are acceptable. All containers must be empty.

The following will not be accepted: window glass, drinking glasses/stemware, dishware, ceramics, mirrors, light bulbs and TVs.

In addition, attendees can bring nonperishable food donations for the Loaves & Fishes Food Pantry.

Delmont library to host fall bazaar

Delmont Public Library will host a fall bazaar from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday in the library’s community room.

It will feature handmade items, homemade snacks, tech answers, a make-it-and-take-it children’s craft, iced tea samples, $5 used book bags and more.

Handmade items and gently used book donations for the bazaar can be dropped off between 11 a.m. and 7 p.m. Sept. 7 and 8 at the library, 75 School St.

International Women kick off 2021-22 year

The International Women group will kick off its new season with a meeting at 9:30 a.m. Friday at Cross Roads Presbyterian Church, 2310 Haymaker Road, Monroe­ville.

The meeting will be a chance for members to catch up with those they haven’t seen during the pandemic. The church’s usual babysitting service is suspended because of health and safety restrictions.

The following public meetings will be held in the Star’s coverage area:

• Franklin Regional school board committee-of-the-whole meeting (no voting), 7:30 p.m. Sept. 13 at the Murrysville municipal building, 4100 Sardis Road. Meetings are broadcast live on Comcast local access Channel 19, and streamed at Murrysville.com.

• Delmont council, 7 p.m. Sept. 14 at the borough building, 77 Greensburg St.

• Franklin Regional school board voting meeting, 7:30 p.m. Sept. 20 at the Murrysville municipal building.
