Delmont library plans 2021 events

After finishing 2020 with a new building, Delmont Public Library officials are gearing up for the first events of the new year — two outdoor walks exploring local nature spots.

A “First Day Walk” will take place from 1 to 3 p.m., Jan 1 at the Tomer Reserve, a 17-acre wooded property at the north end of Twin Oaks Lane in Murrysville, owned and managed by the Westmoreland Conservancy.

The library and conservancy will also partner for an “Owl Prowl” from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m., Jan. 28 at the Morosini Reserve on Morosini Farm Court in Murrysville.

There is no cost for either event, but registration is required by calling 724-468-5329.

School board elects officers

The Franklin Regional school board elected its officers for 2021 on Dec. 8.

Herb Yingling will continue as president, with Paul Scheinert as vice president and Scott Weinman as treasurer.

The board will meet next at 7:30 p.m., Jan. 11. At that same meeting, the board voted to continue holding virtual meetings, streamed via its YouTube channel, until further notice.

Recreation department issues ‘12 for 12’ challenge

The Murrysville Recreation Department is challenging residents to explore 12 miles of municipal in the 12 weeks between January and March.

All participants will receive a sticker decal and be entered to win a prize at the end of the challenge.

Legion offers scholarships

The Pennsylvania American Legion is offering oratorical scholarships to high school students in grades 9 to 12 whether in public, private, parochial or homeschool.

The 2021 PA Oratorical Scholarship Program awards $7,500 for first place, $5,000 for runner-up and $4,000 for second runner-up. The school and post contests, whether in-person or virtual, will take place Jan. 3. Students must notify and apply by contacting their local American Legion post by Dec. 23.

Women’s Business Network meetings

The Murrysville chapter of the Women’s Business Network meets regularly on the second and fourth Thursday of the month, 8:30 a.m. at Dick’s Diner, 4200 William Penn Highway, Murrysville. Meetings have been taking place in a hybrid format, with an option to attend online.
