Heritage trail Poker Run set for next month

Westmoreland Heritage Trail officials will host their annual festival and poker run from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. in Murrysville.

Each participant in the poker run will stop at five checkpoints along the trail to choose a playing card from the deck. At the end of the event, participants will have a complete poker hand, with the best hands receiving prizes for first, second and third place. This is not a race. Participants can choose an 8-mile bicycle ride or 4-mile (round-trip) walk to the checkpoints.

Registration before May 25 is $25. Day-of registration is $30. All registered participants will receive a 2024 Poker Run t-shirt. Registration will be at 9 a.m. at the Murrysville Community Center, 3091 Carson Avenue. The poker run begins at 10 a.m. All players must return by 11:30 a.m. Awards and a raffle will follow at noon.

The afternoon will include basket raffles, food vendors, ice cream, beer and discounts for new Westmoreland Heritage Trail memberships. It will be held rain or shine.

All proceeds will go towards trail maintenance and future improvements.

Delmont Daze meeting

Organizers for the annual Delmont Daze borough festival will hold a planning meeting at 6 p.m. May 20. Anyone interested in volunteering or helping to plan the festival is invited to attend.

It will be at the borough building, 77 Greensburg Street in Delmont.

Car show

Union Presbyterian Church will host a June 1 car show from 2-6 p.m. at the church, 656 Route 380 in Murrysville.

The afternoon will include music, food, raffle baskets, 50/50, baked goods sale and more. All proceeds will benefit the Veterans Homeless Parsonage in Indiana.

Shredding event

State Rep. Jill Cooper will host a May 23 shredding event for sensitive documents, from 4-6 p.m. at her office in Donal Plaza, 105 Pfeffer Road, Ste. 5, in Export.

There is no cost to attend. The event is for personal documents and not commercial use, and there is a limit of two boxes or bags.

The event will also include a food drive for the Westmoreland Food Bank. Optional donations must be in non-perishable, non-glass containers.

MEDC meeting

The Murrysville Export Democratic Club will meet at 7 p.m. May 21 at the Murrysville Community Center, 3091 Carson Avenue.

The primary election results will be topic of discussion. All registered Democrats are welcome.

PrimoHoagies opening

PrimoHoagies will its first Westmoreland County location on May 16 at 4474 William Penn Highway in Murrysville.

The first 100 customers in line will receive a free Primo Size Hoagie, and throughout the opening day, customers who enroll in the restaurant’s rewards program can purchase a Primo Size Hoagie for $6.99.

The chain was recently named the Best Sandwich or Sub Shop in USA Today’s 2023 Readers’ Choice Awards.

The restaurant will be open from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. daily.

Rewind Reuse Center summer mini-camps

The Rewind Reuse Center in Export will host a series of summer mini-camps for children who have completed grades 1-6. The registration fee is $5 per child, per session. Each session will have 16 students with a waitlist.

The sessions will be:

• June 18 and 20: Nature art

• June 25 and 27: Jewelry and beads

• July 16 and 18: Sculpture and papier mache

• July 25 and 25: Wood and painting

• Aug. 6 and 8: Fabric and fiber

• Aug. 13 and 15: Collage and mosaic

Chalk art festival

The Delmont Visionary Committee will host a free June 15 chalk art festival from 12:30-3:30 p.m. at the Delmont Volunteer Fire Department, 2360 Route 66 in Delmont.

Featuring “The Chalking Dad” Erik Greenawalt, children and adults are invited to express their creativity. The afternoon will feature live music, food, games, prizes, face painting, raffle baskets and a bicycle rodeo for children. Participants in the rodeo can bring their own bicycle and helmet or use one provided at the event.

Active shooter program

Union Presbyterian Church will host an active shooter presentation at 5:30 p.m. May 20 at the church, 656 Route 380 in Murrysville.

There will cookies and coffee following the presentation.

Protect PT hike in Murrysville

Citizen environmental group Protect PT and the Turtle Creek Watershed and Airshed Communities will host a May 18 hike in Murrysville’s Duff Park.

It will be at 10 a.m. Local residents will share their connection to the park and advocate for regional green spaces.

Hikers will leave from the trailhead near the Airgas building, 4349 William Penn Highway in Murrysville.

Aria412 at Symphony East

The Symphony East’s May 20 program will include four vocalists and piano accompaniment from Aria412, which began producing monthly cabaret opera and musical theater shows in 2017.

It will be at 1 p.m. at the Lamplighter, 6566 Route 66 in Salem, and is open to the public. No reservations are required; a $10 donation is requested.

Quilt class

The Delmont Historical Preservation Society will host a May 18 quilt class for beginners.

It will be at 10 a.m. at the Delmont Public Library, 75 School St. The fee is $35 cash or check and includes the instruction and materials to make a complete barn quilt. The quilts are painted, not sewn.
