Murrysville area: History talk, plant sale and more

Local historian and art expert Fred Threlfall will be the featured speaker at East Suburban Art League’s May 2, 2024, meeting.

History, art expert at ESAL

The East Suburban Artists League will welcome local history and art expert Fred Threlfall as its featured speaker on May 2.

Threlfall has served as a seasonal park ranger at Fort Necessity, giving battlefield tours and creating a series of art pieces showing the fort in its heyday.

Threlfall’s personal history and family ties go back to significant historical events such as the Homestead Steel Strike and Braddock’s Defeat.

The meeting will be at 6:45 p.m. at Christ’s Lutheran Church, 5330 Old Logan Ferry Road in Murrysville.

Garden club plant sale

The Murrysville Garden Club will host its annual plant sale beginning at 11 a.m. May 9. The sale will last until the plants are gone, and will be at the Murrysville Volunteer Fire Company pavilion, 3235 Sardis Road in Murrysville.

The club is selling annuals, perennials and hanging baskets in addition to propagated plants, second-hand tools and garden decor. Proceeds will benefit the club’s scholarship program.

At 2:30 p.m., club members will conduct demonstrations on dividing plants, and at 5:30 p.m. Crystal Volchko of Rust Belt Natives will host a short talk about native Pennsylvania plants.

The club’s regular meetings are at 10:30 a.m. the fourth Tuesday of the month from March through November, at the Murrysville Community Library, 4130 Sardis Road, Murrysville.

Delmont Stormwater Authority meeting

The Delmont Stormwater Authority will meet at 6:30 p.m. May 1 in the borough building at 77 Greensburg Street.

State-mandated improvements to the borough’s stormwater infrastructure are outside the borough’s annual budget, and the authority is in the process of initiating a stormwater utility to provide funding for those expenses based on fees assessed on properties throughout Delmont.

The fee will apply to all properties including tax-exempt organizations.

The public is invited to attend. The authority will also meet June 26 at the same time and location.

STREAM Expo

Franklin Regional school officials will host a May 15 STREAM Expo at their intermediate school which will be open to the community.

It will be from 6-8:30 p.m. at FR Intermediate School, 4125 Sardis Road in Murrysville, and will feature themed activities for students in kindergarten through grade 8. There is no cost to attend, and a list of courses and activity sign-ups is available through May 6 at FRSDk12.org.

Kona Ice and Tom’s Coffee Truck will also be on hand.

Rummage sale

Union Presbyterian Church will host a rummage sale from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. May 10 and 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. May 11 at the church, 656 Route 380 in Murrysville.

Historical society fundraiser

The Export Historical Society will host a May 5 spaghetti dinner fundraiser from 12-6 p.m.

It will be in the Export Moose social hall at 5903 Washington Avenue. Meals will include homemade sauce from former Spaghetti & Steak House owner Monica Meehan. The cost is $12 for adults and $6 for children.

Drug Take Back Day

The Murrysville Police Department will participate in the National Drug Take Back Day from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. April 27.

Residents can bring unused prescription drugs for safe disposal.

In addition, residents can also fill out a form to receive a new license plate if their current plate is worn out or illegible. Police will have MV-46 forms available. A plate is deemed illegible when one or more numbers or letters cannot be recognized from 50 feet away or if it is blistering, peeling, or has lost reflectivity.

Election food drive

The Manor Lions Club will be collecting non-perishable food on April 23 at the borough’s polling precinct, 44 Main Street. Donations will go to the Manor Food Pantry, and monetary donations are also welcome.

Christian art show in Murrysville

The 47th annual Christian Art Show will be held from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. April 20 and 12-4 p.m. April 21.

It will be at Calvary Lutheran Church, at Old William Penn Highway and School Road in Murrysville. Lunch will be available on April 20 at the church’s Gallery Cafe.

Free mountain biking session

The PA Interscholastic Cycling League will host a May 11 “Mountain Bike Try-It” event open to all Franklin Regional students entering grades 6-12 who are interested in learning more about the FR Mountain Biking Team.

It will be from 1-3 p.m. at Franklin Regional Senior High School, 3200 School Road in Murrysville. Discover mountain biking through games and activities led by licensed mountain bike coaches. No experience needed. Participants should bring a bike and helmet. For more, email jpottinger@gatewayk12.org.

Used book sale

The Murrysville Community Library and local branch of the American Association of University Women will host their annual used book sale April 25-27.

The sale will be from 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. April 25 and 26, and 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. April 27.

Delmont library events

• April 24: Wildlife observation class, 4 p.m. Limit of 10, register online.

• April 24 and May 11: Learn how to navigate using Windows 11, Microsoft’s latest operating system, 1-3 p.m. Bring your own laptop and power supply. Registration is required.

• April 27: Straw bale gardening class, 10 a.m. to noon. Learn how to prepare straw bales which can provide constant fertilizer for growing vegetables, herbs and flowers. Limit of 25, register online or by phone.

• April 29: Library garden clean-up day, 5:30 p.m. Bring gloves and tools and help prepare the library’s outdoor garden for the growing season.

• April 30: Talk with a game warden, 5 p.m. Learn about the work of the Pennsylvania Game Commission with a wildlife conservation officer from the commission’s Southwest Region. Limit of 25, register online or by phone.
