Intro to fishing program in Murrysville

The Murrysville Recreation Department and Pennsylvania Fish & Boat Commission will host an “Intro to Fishing” program at 10 a.m. July 13 at the Townsend Park Pond.

There is no cost to attend. Participants can learn basic fishing skills. No fishing license is necessary and all equipment will be provided.

‘Music and Memoir’ at Murrysville library

The Murrysville Community Library will host flutist Gemma Stemley at 2 p.m. July 15 for “Music and Memoir,” where Stemley will share music from her home, Trinidad & Tobago.

Stemley will also read selections from her recent memoir, “Finding Home: A Sentimental Journey.”

Diabetes speaker at ‘Boomers & Beyond’

Certified diabetes care and education specialist Susan Balog will present “Diabetes: Prevalence and Control” at the next Boomers & Beyond speaker series.

It will be at noon July 11 at Mother of Sorrows Social Hall, 4202 Old William Penn Highway in Murrysville. Balog will discuss warning signs for diabetes, prevention and management methods.

Doors open at 11:30 a.m., and attendees may bring a bag lunch and guest. There is no cost to attend. Beverages are provided.

‘Pioneer for a Day’

The Murrysville Historical Preservation Society and Murrysville Recreation Department will host a “Pioneer for a Day” program at the Sampson Clark Toll House on West Pike Street.

It will be from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. July 11, and is intended for children ages 8 to 12.

The program will touch on cooking methods, herbal medicine, weaving, candle making, gunsmithing and more, including a class in the 1800s replica schoolhouse.

The cost is $50 per child.

Upcoming Delmont library programs

The Delmont Public Library will host the following July programs. For a complete program listing, see DelmontLibrary.org.

• July 10: Delmont Diggers program with a guest speaker from Westmoreland Cleanways discussing how to care for and maintain a garden. It will be at 5:30 p.m. and is for children ages 2 to 12.

• July 11: Read Around the World — Poland, will take place at 10:30 a.m. and 5:30 p.m. with Murrysville author and Polish native Klaudyna Grudowski. It will include a Polish story and Polish food.

• July 13: STEM Thursday, will take place at 10:30 a.m. and 5:30 p.m. with a program exploring microbes. Children will use microscopes to explore the invisible world all around us. It is for children ages 4 to 12.

• July 15: Painting with Miss Judy, will take place at 10 a.m. and noon, for children ages 4 to 12.

• July 15: Delmont Community Band concert, will take place at 6 p.m. on the library’s porch. Bring blankets and lawn chairs to sit and enjoy the music.

Animal Week at Murrysville library

Murrysville Community Library officials will host a series of events to mark Animal Week July 10-14:

• July 10: Veterinarian Betsy Kennon will talk about her book, “Scooter: Therapy Cat,” 6:30 p.m., for teens and adults. Proceeds from book sales will go to Animal Protectors of Allegheny Valley.

• July 12: Pittsburgh Zoomobile, “Wonders of Wildlife” presentation, 1 p.m., for teens.

• July 13: Murrysville author Nina Damato will perform a 1 p.m. reading of her book, “The Extraordinarily Ordinary Kittens,” about her two blind cats. Proceeds from book sales will go to Kiski Valley Cat & Kitten Rescue.

• July 14: Dog reading pals program for children, 4 p.m.

Throughout the week, library visitors will receive a pet craft kit to make at home. The library will also host a drive to collect items for local shelters throughout the week, including pet toys, blankets, towels, canned pumpkin, canned chicken, uncooked white rice, and any brand of wet or dry dog or cat food in the original container with expiration date and lot number.

Delmont Daze seeks volunteers

An organizing meeting for the 2023 Delmont Daze celebration will be at 9:30 a.m. July 12 at the borough building, 77 Greensburg Street.

Mayor Alyce Urban is seeking volunteers to help coordinate and run the annual one-day community festival, which will be Aug. 5. Anyone interested in volunteering is invited to attend.
