New Rotaract club forms

Dominick Fogle of Delmont was installed as the inaugural president for the new Rotaract Club of Delmont-Murrysville during the club’s charter meeting, held July 26 at the Delmont Public Library.

Rotaract’s mission is to provide an opportunity for men and women to enhance their leadership skills through friendship, service to their communities and other projects. In addition to 10 mentors, the club is comprised of more than 20 adults with intellectual or developmental disabilities. Delmont-Salem Rotary member Harold Hicks will serve as advisor to the club.

AAUW speaker gives Albert Gallatin talk

Guest speaker John Buechel, a historian and National Park Service guide, will talk about the life and career of Albert Gallatin at the next American Association of University Women’s meeting, set for 10 a.m. Sept. 8 in Murrysville.

Gallatin was a U.S. representative in Congress from 1795-1801 and U.S. Treasury Secretary from 1802-1814 where he helped oversee the Louisiana Purchase, financed the War of 1812 and helped fund the Lewis and Clark expedition.

The talk will take place in the TechNook area at the Murrysville Community Library, 4130 Sardis Road. The public is welcome to attend, and registration is not required. Due to covid-19 concerns, those attending are asked to wear a mask.

Cyclo-cross race planned

The Delmont Visionary Committee will host an Oct. 15 cyclo-cross race.

The Delmont CX will take place at 9 a.m. featuring a challenging course that runs the wooded trails, grass runs, steep hills and obstacles at Shields Farm. Racers of all ages and abilities are welcome.

There will be prizes, food and beer available. The entry fee is $45 in men’s and women’s categories, and $25 in the junior division. Proceeds will benefit the committee which wants to make the borough more bike-friendly, and create a spur from the future Westmoreland Heritage Trail into downtown Delmont.

There is no cost to attend and watch the race.

Found art program at ESAL

East Suburban Artists League will host a found art program at 7 p.m., Sept. 1 featuring artist Nicole C. Brown, who will each explain how her career has centered around discovering beauty in what others view as junk.

The presentation is free and open to the public, and attendees will also create a found art piece. It will be at Christ’s Lutheran Church, 5330 Old Logan Ferry Road in Murrysville.

Choral group seeks singers

Women of all ages and voice ranges who would like to join the Laurel Harmony Chorus, a chapter of Sweet Adelines in Greensburg, can attend an open house from 7 to 9 p.m. Sept. 8 at Trinity United Church of Christ, 139 N. Main St., Greensburg.

Experience is not required. Refreshments will be available. Those attending should enter the church through the lower level side door.

Fall programs at library

The Murrysville Community Library will host the following fall adult programs:

• Sept. 7: First-time homebuyer seminar, noon

• Sept. 12: Build your balance house, 2 p.m. with Samantha Shields of Alliance Physical Therapy, discussing how to know if you are at risk for falls and how to decrease that risk as you age. This program will be virtual.

• Sept. 12-13: “Charting Your Future,” 6:30 p.m. with Sam Abraham and Vanda Raszewski hosting a two-part series on helping seniors learn to navigate financial, health care, legal and estate issues.

• Sept. 19: “Railroads in Civil War Strategy,” 6 p.m. with host and Civil War reenactor Kenneth Serfass portraying former president Gen. Ulysses S. Grant.

Rummage sale planned

Union Presbyterian Church will host a fall rummage sale Sept. 9-10 at the church, 656 Route 380 in Washington Township.

The sale will run from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sept. 9, and 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Sept. 10. Items other than jewelry, furniture and antiques will not be priced, and will be available for a donation of the customer’s choice.

There will be food available for purchase.

Golf aids Toys for tikes

The Greater Pittsburgh Business Connection will host a Sept. 26 golf outing to benefit Toys for Pittsburgh Tikes.

It will take place at the Westmoreland Country Club, 7100 Mellon Road in Penn Township. Registration begins at 7:30 a.m. with a 9 a.m. shotgun start.

Fall storytime at library

The Murrysville Community Library will host its annual fall storytime sessions fo babies, toddlers and pre-schoolers over six weeks beginning Sept. 13.

“Babies-n-Books,” for children age 12-24 months, will be at 10 a.m. Tuesdays from Sept. 13 to Oct 18. Sessions are 30 minutes.

“Toddler Time,” for children ages 2-3, will be Wednesdays at 10 a.m. from Sept. 14 to Oct. 19. Sessions are 45 minutes.

“Pre-School Storytime,” for children ages 3-6, will be Fridays at 10 a.m. from Sept. 16 to Oct. 21. Sessions are 45 minutes.

All programs are free, but registration is required by visiting MurrysvilleLibrary.org.
