Murrysville area: VA town hall meeting, Alzheimer's benefit and more

Business group awards scholarships

The Murrysville Business and Professional Association recently awarded $500 scholarships to five Franklin Regional seniors. Members of the MBPA Executive Committee visited the high school on May 20 to present scholarship awards to Finian Hutchison, Julia Kravits, Malka Rubin, Mariella Taddonio, and Martin Kuzmkowski.

Egyptian female rulers at Murrysville library

The Murrysville Community Library will be visited by people portraying several of Egypt’s female rulers at a special June 22 presentation.

Susan DeLaney will don full Egpytian regalia to discuss queens like Nefertiti, Cleopatra, Merneith and Hatshepsut. Learn about the impact they had on their country and world.

It will be at 2 p.m. at the library, 4130 Sardis Road in Murrysville. There is no cost to attend. Register via the events calendar at MurrysvilleLibrary.org or by calling 724-327-1102.

VA town hall meeting

The VA Pittsburgh Healthcare System will host a veterans’ town hall and open house at its Monroeville outpatient clinic on June 21.

Veterans and their families, as well as the public, are invited to hear from VA representatives, who are gathering local feedback to help improve the health system’s care.

After the 3 p.m. town hall meeting, there will be tours of the $92 million facility, built in 2022. An open house and resource fair will take place from 4-6 p.m.

The clinic is at 421 Mall Circle Drive in Monroeville.

‘Jesus is My 911’ celebration

First Baptist Church in Monroeville will host a “Jesus is My 911” celebration on July 13.

The event is geared toward children in kindergarten through grade 6 and will include rescue vehicles, crafts, food, Bible stories and more.

It will be from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the church, 3970 Monroeville Blvd. For more, call 412-373-7760.

Community chorus seeking new members

The Monroeville Chorus is seeking new members. The chorus regularly performs at community events, group meetings and hospitals. There is no audition necessary.

Free basketball clinics

The Delmont Recreation Committee will host free basketball clinics beginning the final week of June at Newhouse Park.

The clinics are organized by age groups — grades 1-2, 3-4 and 5-6. Each group will have a one-hour time slot which will change during the weekly sessions. All sessions will be between 9 a.m. and noon at the park, off Stotler Drive in Delmont.

Clinics are weather-dependent.

Each age session is limited to 20 participants. No prerequisite skills are required. Coaches will teach the basics of the game using practice drills.

Association of University People meetings

The Association of University People (AUP) invites singles 50 and over, who are four-year college graduates, to join them for activities and to meet new people.

Activities include monthly dinners, social gatherings, concerts, meeting up at local wineries, and day trips. Those interested can attend three activities as guests before joining.

‘Ginny’s Carniv-Alz’

The Alzheimer’s Association and the Longest Day will host Ginny’s Carniv-Alz from noon to 4 p.m. June 30 in Murrysville to beneit the association.

The afternoon will include carnival games, a petting zoo, dunk tank, caricature artist, pizza, beer, live music, basket raffles and more. It will also include a special beer collaboration bewteen Wye Beer and Helltown Brewing.

It will be at Ginny’s Neighborhood Pizza Joint, 5549 Old William Penn Highway in Murrysville.

Sardis fire company to host comedy fundraiser

The Sardis Volunteer Fire Company will host a June 14 fundraiser with comedians David Kaye and Mike Wysocki.

It will be at 7 p.m. (doors open at 5 p.m.) at the company’s social hall, 5205 Rocky Hill Lane in Murrysville, and is for those 21 and older. The cost is $25 and the event is BYOB. It will also include a gift basket auction and games of chance. The PGH Eatz food truck will also be on-site.

Chalk art festival

The Delmont Visionary Committee will host a free June 15 chalk art festival from 12:30-3:30 p.m. at the Delmont Volunteer Fire Department, 2360 Route 66 in Delmont.

Featuring “The Chalking Dad” Erik Greenawalt, children and adults are invited to express their creativity. The afternoon will feature live music, food, games, prizes, face painting, raffle baskets and a bicycle rodeo for children. Participants in the rodeo can bring their own bicycle and helmet or use one provided at the event.
