Symphony East will host a tribute to veterans at its May 15 program at The Lamplighter in Salem.

‘Women & Wine’ bowling league

A women’s bowling league, “Women & Wine,” invites those interested to join the group on Tuesdays from June 6 to Aug. 15, 6:30 p.m. at Nesbit’s Lanes, 3501 Leechburg Road in Plum.

All skill levels are welcome. Participants can sign up a team of four or join an existing team.

‘Muffins with Mom’ at Delmont library

The Delmont Public Library will host a “Muffins with Mom” event at 10 a.m. May 13 at the library.

Children and mothers are invited to enjoy muffins, stories and gift-making. The event is for children ages 2-10. Registration is required at DelmontLibrary.org.

The library is at 75 School Street in Delmont.

‘Germans to America’ at Murrysville library

The Murrysville Community Library will host a presentation by Unlock Your History and the Heinz History Center about German immigration to the U.S.

“Germans to America” will be at 6:30 p.m. May 8 at the library, 4130 Sardis Road, and will discuss how heirlooms, genealogy, translation and history converge.

Throat cancer presentation at Boomers & Beyond series

The Mother of Sorrows Church’s “Boomers & Beyond” speaker series will welcome Dr. Jonas Johnson, professor and former chair of the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine’s Department of Otolaryngology.

Johnson will give a comprehensive overview of throat cancer, from discovery to treatment. He will also talk about the UPMC Survivorship Clinic’s work to improve long-term care and the overall outlook for survivors.

It will be at noon May 9 at the church’s social hall, 4202 Old William Penn Highway in Murrysville.

Veteran tribute at Symphony East

Symphony East will host a veteran tribute performance, “Letters from the Front, Words of Warriors,” at 1 p.m. May 15 in Salem.

Actual letters from veterans will be read while musicians Donna Groom, Rick Purcell and Mark Groom perform music from various wartime periods. It will be at the Lamplighter, 6566 William Penn Highway in Salem.

A $10 donation is requested.

Estate-planning presentation at Delmont library

The Delmont Public Library will host an estate-planning presentation by the Community Foundation of Westmoreland County at 1 p.m. May 8.

Sara Swaney from the Community Foundation, estate-planning attorney Todd Turin and certified elder-law attorney Christian DeDiana will discuss how to leave a legacy through planned giving.

National Day of Prayer set

The Delmont Volunteer Fire Department and local churches from Delmont, Export and Murrysville will host a National Day of Prayer celebration, at 7 p.m. May 4.

The theme for 2023 is “Pray Fervently in Righteousness and Avail Much.” The day encourages prayer for family, church, business, education, military, government and arts/media. In addition to prayer led by local pastors, there will be a presentation of the U.S. flag, the Pledge of Allegiance and worship music.

Photographer featured at ESAL meeting

The East Suburban Artists League will host featured speaker and photographer Alexis Dillon at its May 4 meeting.

Dillon has been a photographer for four decades, specializing in black-and-white and infrared images. She is a graduate of Indiana University of Pennsylvania with a degree in visual arts and photography instruction. After teaching public high school for more than three decades, Dillon is now concentrating on her own work.

Craft fair at library

The Murrysville Community Library will host a May 6 craft fair from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

It will include handmade jewelry, home decor, candles, wreaths, knitted and crocheted items, wood crafts, coffee, chocolates and more.

Some vendor spaces ($30) are still available. Vendors must bring their own folding table.

Speaker explores remote corners of Tanzania, Uganda

The Murrysville chapter of the American Association of University Women will host featured speakers Rob Brown and his daughter Ursula.

Brown is a medical doctor and author of “Toxic Home/Conscious Home,” which focuses on eliminating toxins as well as the potential effects of things like radiation from household items like microwaves, cell phones and wireless routers.

The program will take place at 10 a.m. May 11 in the Tech Nook at the library, 4130 Sardis Road in Murrysville.
