AAUW collecting for community book sale
The Murrysville American Association of University Women is collecting donations of gently used books starting April 1 for the group’s used book sale on partnership with the Murrysville Community Library.
The sale will take place May 5-7 at the library, 4130 Sardis Road in Murrysville.
The library is collecting books, CDs, DVDs and jigsaw puzzles. The following books will not be accepted: encyclopedias, manuals and textbooks, religious, medical, out-of-date, damaged, musty or moldy books.

Heritage trail bridge to close for two weeks
The bridge on the eastern side of Trafford Road along the Westmoreland Heritage Trail will close for two weeks beginning March 21.
The bridge deck is being replaced and will be closed, with no alternate route available. Walkers and bikers are asked to avoid the area or turn around as they reach that portion of the trail.

Symphony East welcomes PSO harpist on March 21
Symphony East will welcome Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra principal harpist Gretchen Van Hoesen for a program of music on March 21.
A faculty member at both Carnegie Mellon and Duquesne universities, Hoesen has been the PSO’s principal harpist since 1977.
The program will be held at 1 p.m. at the Lamplighter Restaurant, 6566 William Penn Highway in Salem. No reservations are required, however a $10 donation is requested of adults who attend.

Spaghetti dinner will benefit St. John’s, St. Mary’s parishes
A March 20 spaghetti dinner from noon to 4 p.m. will benefit St. John’s and St. Mary’s parishes in Delmont.
Dinner comes with spaghetti, meatballs, salad, bread, dessert and drinks. The annual dinner is returning following a hiatus during the covid-19 pandemic.
There will also be a basket raffle, a cash raffle and 50/50 drawing.
The dinner will be at St. John’s, 497 Athena Drive in Delmont.
Recreation department to host ‘hot chocolate hike’ on March 26
The Murrysville Recreation Department will host another “hot chocolate hike” at 10 a.m., March 26 on the trails at the Scouting Knob area of Murrysville Community Park.
The 2- to 3-mile hike will meet at the dog park area off Wiestertown Road, just past the park entrance. It is a wooded hike with slopes and may require stepping over fallen trees. Hikers should dress for the weather with proper footwear.

Following the hike, participants will be able to enjoy hot chocolate.
Garden club offers scholarships
The Murrysville Garden Club will offer its annual scholarship to qualified students in the Franklin Regional School District or relatives of a club member.
Those applying must be a high school senior or enrolled in a college or technical school intending to (or already) majoring in horticulture, landscape architecture, conservation, forestry, botany, agriculture, plant pathology, environmental sciences or an allied field in a two- or four-year program.
Eligibility is based on scholastic standing, financial need and general ability. Obtain an application at the Franklin Regional Senior High School counseling office or by calling 724-327-7235 or 412-953-0911.
Co-ed spring soccer camp in Salem
The Salem Township Recreation Board will sponsor a soccer skills and sportsmanship camp on Saturdays beginning April 2, at Seanor Farm Park, Route 22 and Hornick Drive in Salem.
The camp runs from April 2 through May 21 for children ages 4 through 10. Sessions will be from 10-11:30 a.m. THe cost is $60 for residents and $70 for non-residents. The price includes a T-shirt.
Participants should wear athletic shoes, shin guards (mandatory) and bring a water bottle. The camp will be run by Greensburg Salem boys’ head soccer coach Dan Anderson.
A registration letter with the child’s name, age, date of birth, address, parents’ names, contact information and T-shirt size, along with a check made payable to Salem Township Recreation Board, can be sent to Tim D’Aurora, treasurer, 2032 Route 819, Greensburg, Pa., 15601. Registration is due by March 26.
Delmont VFD to host live concert by Saddle Up
Country band Saddle Up will play the Delmont Volunteer Fire Department hall at 9 p.m., March 19.
The cover is $5. The kitchen will be open, and no outside alcohol is permitted. The fire hall is at 2360 Route 66 in Delmont.

Athletic association sets opening day for April 23
The Franklin Regional Athletic Association will host its 2022 opening day April 23 at Murrysville Community Park.
Opening ceremonies will take place at noon in the park, 4056 Wiestertown Road in Murrysville.
Team practices will begin March 28, weather permitting, and team/individual photos will be taken on opening day.

Bible study group begins 6-week course March 21
The Community Bible Study co-ed evening adult class will start a six-week study of the Book of James beginning at 7 p.m., March 21 at Murrysville Alliance Church.
Each week will include small group discussions and large group instruction. There is no cost, but registration is required by going to MurrysvilleEve.CBSclass.org. The deadline to register is March 16.

Rummage sale, egg hunt at Union Presbyterian
Union Presbyterian Church in Washington Township will host a rummage sale from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. March 24, and 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. March 25. Donations can be dropped off at the church, 656 Route 380. Items other than jewelry, furniture and antiques will not be priced, and will be available for a donation of the customer’s choice. There will be food available to purchase.
The church will also host an April 9 Easter egg hunt, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., also at the church. The event includes story-time for children, a craft and lunch.

Registration open for Pittsburgh Youth Chorus ‘Summer Singers’ camp
Registration is open for the Pittsburgh Youth Chorus’ “Summer Singers” day camp. Sessions will take place Aug. 1-5 in Pittsburgh for children ages 7-10, and Aug. 3-5 in Grove City for children ages 7 and older. Sliding-scale tuition is available for all prospective campers.

Murrysville to host glass recycling, food collection
Murrysville officials announced 2022 dates for their glass recycling and food-pantry collection events, which will take place from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the parking lot at Veterans Field, 4200 Sardis Road.
This year’s dates are Saturday (March 19), June 11, Sept. 17 and Dec. 10.
Volunteers from Newlonsburg Presbyterian Church’s Fishes and Loaves Food Pantry will be on hand to collect nonperishable food items.
All colors of glass bottles, jars and jugs will be accepted. Unacceptable items include window glass, drinking glasses, dishware, ceramics, mirrors, light bulbs and TVs.
Fire company to host $6,000 ‘Super Bingo’
The Delmont Volunteer Fire Department Auxiliary will host a $6,000 “Super Bingo” at 6:30 p.m., March 12 at the fire station, 2360 Route 66 in Delmont.
Tickets are $35 in advance and $40 at the door (if still available). No one under 14 is permitted.

Murrysville Woman’s Club to meet March 17
The Murrysville Woman’s Club will meet at noon, March 17 at Hoss’s Steak & Sea House, 4813 William Penn Highway in Murrysville.
Lunch will be served at noon, followed by assembly of baskets for the club’s spring fundraiser on April 30.
