Easter pet photos
session at Heritage Trail
The Murrysville Recreation Department will host an Easter pet photos session from 10 a.m. to noon, April 9 at the Westmoreland Heritage Trail visitor center on Route 22.
The event is free to attend, but donations to Pet Friends Animal Rescue in Irwin will be requested. Walker’s Pet Ho-Tail staff will provide treat bags for pets while supplies last.

Woman’s Club juried
art show set for April 1
The Murrysville Woman’s Club will host its annual juried art exhibit next month.
The show hours will be 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. April 1 and 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. April 2 at the Murrysville municipal building, 4100 Sardis Road.
International Women
meetsfor music program
The local chapter of International Women will meet at 9:30 a.m. April 1 at Cross Roads Presbyterian Church in Monroeville.
The meeting will be followed by a program of music featuring classically trained clarinetist Janice Coppola and guitarist, bassoonist, songwriter and vocalist Julie Harris, who have joined to form a duo after performing for several years at the “Sound of Jewish Music” series in Pittsburgh’s Oakland neighborhood.
They will present their interpretations of klezmer, Greek and Jewish folks songs.
All women in the community are invited to attend. Because of covid-19, the church’s usual babysitting service will not be available.
Free fishing tournament
planned in Murrysville
The Murrsyville-Export Rotary Club’s annual Joey Gombosh Fishing Derby will take place from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., April 2 at Townsend Park in Murrysville.
The tournament is free for children up to age 15. There is no fee to participate and no fishing license is required.
The park is on Townsend Park Court. The derby will be held at the pond, in the park’s lower area.
Artist Betty Trout gives
talk at Murrysville library
Murrysville artist Betty Trout will talk about her artwork at a March 29 presentation at the Murrysville Community Library, 4130 Sardis Road.
In the past two years, Trout has begun painting “en plein air,” creating natural landscapes and working outdoors with the added challenge of ever-changing sunlight.
Trout has juried into membership in the Pittsburgh Society of Artists and the Cranberry Artists Network, and her work can be seen year-round at the Latrobe Art Center, and an exhibit of her art is at the library through the end of March.
The presentation will be at 6 p.m. Registration is recommended at MurrysvilleLibrary.org.
Recreation program guide published
The Murrysville Recreation Department has published its annual program guide, which is available online at MurrysvillePArecreation.com
The guide includes information on spring and summer programs at all of the municipal parks, as well as dates for the summer Tuesdays at Townsend concert series, nature programs and more.
Rewards available
to Heritage Trail users
Those who commit to making annual donations as members of the Westmoreland Heritage Trail chapter, which helps fund trail projects and maintenance, will be eligible for a new business discount card.
The trail includes 17 miles from Saltsburg to Delmont and from Export to Trafford.
The Westmoreland Trailblazers of the Leadership Westmoreland Class of 2022 has memberships ranging from $20 for an individual, $30 for a family and $50 for a nonprofit organization.
The cards will be awarded to the first 400 members of 2022 and will remain valid until March 2023. The 14 businesses offering discounts are along the trail corridor, including restaurants, a bike shop, a fitness center and kayak and canoe rental shop. Spaghetti dinner to aid St. John’s, St. Mary’s
A spaghetti dinner from noon to 4 p.m. March 20 will benefit St. John’s and St. Mary’s parishes in Delmont.
Dinner comes with spaghetti, meatballs, salad, bread, dessert and drinks. The annual dinner is returning following a hiatus during the covid-19 pandemic.
There also will be a basket raffle, a cash raffle and 50-50 drawing. The dinner will be at St. John’s, 497 Athena Drive, Delmont.
Registration open for Pittsburgh Youth Chorus ‘Summer Singers’ camp
Registration is open for the Pittsburgh Youth Chorus’ “Summer Singers” day camp. Sessions will take place Aug. 1-5 in Pittsburgh for children ages 7-10, and Aug. 3-5 in Grove City for children ages 7 and older. Sliding-scale tuition is available for all prospective campers.

Symphony East greets PSO harpist March 21
Symphony East will welcome Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra principal harpist Gretchen Van Hoesen for a program of music March 21.
A faculty member at Carnegie Mellon and Duquesne universities, Hoesen has been the PSO’s principal harpist since 1977.
The program will be held at 1 p.m. at the Lamplighter Restaurant, 6566 William Penn Highway, Salem. No reservations are required, but a $10 donation is requested of adults who attend.

AAUW collecting for community book sale
The Murrysville American Association of University Women is collecting donations of gently used books starting April 1 for the group’s used book sale in partnership with the Murrysville Community Library.
The sale will take place May 5-7 at the library, 4130 Sardis Road in Murrysville. Book collection will begin April 1.
The library is collecting books, CDs, DVDs and jigsaw puzzles. The following books will not be accepted: encyclopedias, manuals and textbooks, religious, medical, out-of-date, damaged, musty or moldy books.

Heritage trail bridge to close for two weeks
The bridge on the eastern side of Trafford Road along the Westmoreland Heritage Trail will close for two weeks beginning March 21.
The bridge deck is being replaced and will be closed, with no alternate route available. Walkers and bikers are asked to avoid the area or turn around as they reach that portion of the trail.

Recreation department to host ‘hot chocolate hike’
The Murrysville Recreation Department will host another “hot chocolate hike” at 10 a.m., March 26 on the trails at the Scouting Knob area of Murrysville Community Park.
The 2- to 3-mile hike will meet at the dog park area off Wiestertown Road, just past the park entrance. It is a wooded hike with slopes and might require stepping over fallen trees. Hikers should dress for the weather with proper footwear.

After the hike, participants will be able to enjoy hot chocolate.
Garden club offers scholarships
The Murrysville Garden Club will offer its annual scholarship to qualified students in the Franklin Regional School District or relatives of a club member.
Those applying must be a high school senior or enrolled in a college or technical school intending to (or already) majoring in horticulture, landscape architecture, conservation, forestry, botany, agriculture, plant pathology, environmental sciences or an allied field in a two- or four-year program.
Eligibility is based on scholastic standing, financial need and general ability. Obtain an application at the Franklin Regional Senior High School counseling office or by calling 724-327-7235 or 412-953-0911.
Co-ed spring soccer camp in Salem
The Salem Township Recreation Board will sponsor a soccer skills and sportsmanship camp on Saturdays beginning April 2 at Seanor Farm Park, Route 22 and Hornick Drive in Salem.
The camp runs from April 2 to May 21 for children ages 4 to 10. Sessions will be from 10 to 11:30 a.m. Cost is $60 for residents and $70 for nonresidents. The price includes a T-shirt.
Participants should wear athletic shoes, shin guards (mandatory) and bring a water bottle. The camp will be run by Greensburg Salem boys head soccer coach Dan Anderson.
A registration letter with the child’s name, age, date of birth, address, parents’ names, contact information and T-shirt size, along with a check made payable to Salem Township Recreation Board, can be sent to Tim D’Aurora, treasurer, 2032 Route 819, Greensburg, PA 15601. Registration is due by March 26.
