Murrysville library issues ‘Winter Reading Challenge’ to patrons

For their “Winter Reading Challenge,” Murrysville Public Library officials are asking patrons to give themselves a literary challenge.
“Most of our patrons tend to stick to a favorite type of book,” said library associate Janeene Foster. “A big part of this program is to challenge participants to step outside of their comfort zone.”
To encourage this, the staff put together staff-recommended book lists in 12 different categories. Readers will be able to earn virtual raffle tickets in the Beanstack app for every category they try.
Many of the virtual raffle prizes come from local businesses.
“At the library, we recognize the value of supporting our local community,” Foster said.
With the winter months driving people indoors and a strong upsurge in covid-19 cases across the nation, library officials said the challenge is a way to help foster community.
“The reality of social distancing, especially in the winter months, is that people may feel isolated and alone,” library Director Amy Riegner said. “The benefit of the Winter Reading Challenge and the Community Reading Goal is that community members can feel as though they are contributing to the unified cause while still social distancing during cold and flu season.”
And despite the massive snowfall the region just saw, the program doesn’t begin until the “official” first day of winter, Dec. 21. Registration is open to all ages, and the challenge runs through March 20.
