Murrysville officials: Keep off the lawn at new playground, splash park
At the risk of sounding like the stereotypical “old man yelling from his porch,” Murrysville officials need residents to stay off their lawn.
That’s because the lawn in question is in the process of growing.
As municipal officials prepare for a June 29 grand opening at their “destination playground” and splash park inside Murrysville Community Park, they are hoping to have a lush lawn in place.
But it can’t happen if visitors don’t heed signs to stay off the grounds.
“We need at least two weeks of weather like we’ve been having in order for grass seed to take hold,” Chief Administrator Jim Morrison said.
At their first June meeting, council members were trying to balance the need to get landscaping in place with the excitement residents — and their children — have in anticipation of the new park opening.
“The reasonable side of me says to wait,” said recreation director Carly Greene. “But I also know that I get phone calls every day from people asking when the park is opening.”
The June 29 grand opening will be at 11 a.m. Until then, Morrison and Greene said they hope residents will respect the signage asking to steer clear of the area.
“We can start publicizing (the opening date) and maybe that will back some people off,” Morrison said.
KEEP OFF THE TRAIL
The same sentiment — steer clear — has been adopted by Westmoreland Heritage Trail officials as contractors work to get the trail’s fourth phase complete in time for a grand opening Aug. 17 at the Export Ethnic Food & Music Festival.
“I saw about six people on the trail through Export as I was on my way here tonight,” Morrison said on June 5. “Everyone is very anxious.”
Trail officials are also asking that residents park in designated trail parking areas (Roberts Trail Access/Duff Park in Murrysville, Saunders Station Area in Monroeville, and B-Y Park in Trafford). Parking in lots owned by private businesses is not permitted.
