Food collection event set for May 1
Busy Beaver and the Rotary Club of Delmont-Salem will host a May 1 food collection event for the Westmoreland County Food Bank.
It will be from 8:30-11:30 a.m. in the former AMC Theater parking lot off of Hollywood Boulevard, near Delmont.
Food bank officials said the items they need most are peanut butter, canned or pouched tuna/chicken/salmon, heavier soups or stews, cereal and boxed meals such as macaroni and cheese or Hamburger Helper.
The event will permit car drop-offs only.
Etna artist to present at ESAL meeting
Etna artist Tom Mosser will host a Zoom presentation from his studio at the next East Suburban Artists League meeting, set for 7 p.m. on May 7.

The following public meetings are scheduled in the coming weeks:
• Franklin Regional committee-of-the-whole meeting, 7:30 p.m., May 3. Meetings are streamed live at YouTube.com/user/FranklinRegionalSD.
• Export council, 6:30 p.m., May 4 at the borough council chambers, 5821 Washington Ave.
• Murrysville council, 7 p.m., May 5 at the municipal building, 4100 Sardis Road. Meetings are broadcast live on Comcast local access Channel 19 and streamed at Murrysville.com.
• Delmont council, 7 p.m., May 11 at the Delmont Public Library, 75 School St.
• Franklin Regional school board voting meeting, 7:30 p.m., May 24. Meetings are streamed live at YouTube.com/user/FranklinRegionalSD.
Antique appraisal event on May 15
The Delmont Historical Preservation Society will host “Delmont Discovery Day” from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., May 15 at the Delmont Public Library.
Melissa Herman of Salem Antiquities in Delmont will serve as a guest appraiser. The appraisal fee is $10 for one item and $15 for two. All items must be hand-carried to the event, however large items can be appraised from photos of identifiable makers’ marks, company names or dates of manufacture.
In addition, the society will have a display of historical photos, documents and artifacts. Attendees are welcome to bring photos or items, either to share or donate to the society.

There is no cost to attend; masks are required and social distancing will be observed. The library is at 75 School Street.
Center Ice Arena gets a new name
Center Ice Arena in Salem will now be known as Palmer Imaging Arena, after owners Black Bear Sports Group and operating partner Ice Rink Performance Group reached an agreement with Monroeville business Palmer Products Imaging.
Opened in 1997, the 125,000 square-foot facility inludes three NHL-sized ice rinks, including one that is converted to a dry court March through August.
The arena is at 100 Center Ice Drive in Salem.
MEDC seeking non-partisan survey input
The Murrysville Export Democratic Club is seeking residents’ opinions on local, state and national issues. The club’s online 2021 Murrysville Community Survey is available to fill out by clicking on the “MEDC Community Survey” link at MurrysvilleDemocrats.org. All answers are anonymous.
Results will be accepted through May 15, and the club will share the results later this summer.

Murrysville recreation officials plan ‘Chalk the Walk’ event
The Murrysville Recreation Department wants families to help decorate the walking trail at Murrysville Community Park with chalk drawings on May 15.
From 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., a $10 donation will get a 4-by-4-foot space on the trail. Chalk will be provided, but attendees can also bring their own. Kona Ice will be on-site selling desserts, and DJ Joe will provide music.

Women’s club offers scholarships
The Murrysville Woman’s Club will award a minimum of two non-traditional scholarships in 2021, in the amount of $3,000 each.
For the past 39 years, the club awarded scholarships to adult women seeking higher education opportunities. All applicants must be 21 or older, and demonstrate financial need. They must either be currently enrolled or able to provide proof of acceptance for enrollment in higher education.
Applications are due by May 15 and are available at Seton Hill College, Westmoreland County Community College near Youngwood and its Bushy Run Education Center in Murrysville, and University of Pittsburgh’s Greensburg campus. They also will be available at public libraries in Murrysville, Delmont, Greensburg/Hempfield and New Kensington, provided those libraries are currently open.

Cornerstone to host ‘Spring Fling Thing’ for kids
Cornerstone Ministries will host a free children’s carnival, 4-6 p.m. and 7-9 p.m., May 14 at the church, 2200 Cornerstone Lane in Murrysville.
There will be carnival games, a kid-friendly escape room, balloon art, crafts, a kids’ train and a performance by an illusionist. Food will be available from local food trucks.
Children age 5 through fifth grade are invited to attend.
Registration is required, and can be done at CornerstoneKidsLive.net/fun-events.
The event will follow CDC guidelines for covid-19 prevention.
Recreation to host ‘Ulysses S. Grant’
“Ulysses S. Grant,” in the form of professional living historian Ken Serfass, will give a digital version of his one-man performance on the life of the Civil War general and 18th U.S. president.
The program will take place at 6:30 p.m. on Friday, May 7, via Zoom.
