News briefs: Stress management session, mass transit study, free tax prep, student scholarships and more

Shaler Area School District will host “Managing Stress During Stressful Times,” a virtual community event from 6 to 7 p.m. on March 3.
The event will offer resources to students and families to help them identify and deal with the increased stressors of living during a pandemic.
Topics will include: tips for parents to help their student manage stress or deal with difficulties engaging in instruction in the hybrid or virtual models; introduction of Shaler Area district staff and what help they can provide; and online resources available to students and families.
The presentation will be broadcast live on the Shaler Area YouTube channel at youtube.com/c/SATVArchives.
A recording of the presentation will be posted on the site for anyone not able to participate live.
The event is presented by district school counselors, district social workers and the Human Services Administration Organization.
Port Authority meetings on tap
Residents who use mass transit are encouraged to tune in to a series of online public meetings by the Port Authority of Allegheny County.
The Port Authority is preparing its NEXTransit study, the long-range planning effort to determine improvements over the next 25 years. Upcoming meetings are scheduled for 10 a.m. and 5 p.m. on Feb. 25 and 11:30 a.m. and 6 p.m. on March 2.

Free tax prep available
Free tax prep is available through the North Hills Community Outreach.
This is a seasonal program that helps low-income households who earn less than $57,000. The service is available through April 14.
A fully virtual option through an IRS-approved website can be accessed at getyourrefund.org/nhco.
Limited contact options are available in Millvale with an appointment.

Scholarships available to SSA seniors
Applications are available for scholarships from the Glenshaw Century Club for Shaler Area High School seniors.
Applications are available in the guidance office or by sending an email to glenshawcenturyclubinc@gmail.com.
Applications are due by March 19.
Nonperishable items needed for food drive
Donations of nonperishable food items for the Shaler Area Backpack Initiative are accepted at Emmanuel Lutheran Church, 66 Grant Ave., from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. weekdays.
The food program provides weekend meals to more than 100 children in kindergarten through eighth grade, dishing out easy-to-prep meals and single-serving snacks to ensure nutrition isn’t missed when kids are away from the classroom.
Financial donations can be made payable to Shaler Area School District with “Backpack Initiative” in the memo line and mailed to 1800 Mt. Royal Blvd., Glenshaw, PA 15116.
Women’s Business Network meetings set
The Cranberry Chapter of the Women’s Business Network meets on the first and third Thursdays of each month at 7:30 a.m. in Cranberry United Presbyterian Church, 2662 Rochester Road, Cranberry.
