The North Allegheny School District his hosting a program on April 3 to help parents spot signs their teen-age kids may be using drugs and how substance abuse can quickly become an addiction.
The first part of the program “Hidden in Plain Sight” begins at 6:15 p.m. in the lobby of the intermediate school, where people can walk through a mock-up of a teenager’s room to test their skill at identify drug paraphernalia, signs of drug abuse and places where drugs can be hidden.
The main program kicks off at 7 p.m. with a presentation by Dr. Tom Brophy titled “The Teenage Brain & Drug Use: Forging the Path to Addiction.”
Brophy, who is certified in both emergency and addiction medicine, will explain the neuroscience of addiction and how experimentation with various drugs can rapidly lead to addiction.
District officials encourage students in grades 8 through 12 and their parents to attend the event.
