North Hills School Board approved the Future Ready Comprehensive Plan, effective July 1, 2022, through June 30, 2025, at the Oct. 28 legislative meeting.
Pennsylvania school districts are required to present a Future Ready Comprehensive plan to the PA Department of Education every three years.
Board president Allison Mathis was a member of the steering committee for the plan and is excited about where it will take district students.
“A lot of time was spent discussing student preparedness, which is a key component to highlight,” Mathis said. “The district’s stated goal in this section of the plan is to prepare our students to become responsible global citizens by focusing equally on personal development and intellectual growth.”
That section of the comprehensive plan concentrates on middle school student study skills.
“Strengthening study skills will benefit all of our students across all academic areas and subjects,” Mathis said, explaining that by making sure the middle school students have the right study skills in place, it will prepare them better for high school. “The future of North Hills School District is bright.
The board also approved the 2022-23 calendar.
The school calendar shows that the first day of classes for students in the fall of 2022 will be held on Aug. 24, with new teachers reporting on Aug. 9 and professional development days for teachers beginning on Aug. 16.
An update to Policy 903, how the board handles public comments during meetings, was approved, limiting public comments per person to “three minutes in duration and no person may speak more than once on the same topic.” This change is to allow the board to perform “its responsibility for proper governance of the district and the need to conduct its business in an orderly and efficient manner.”
The board did make a small update to the policy by adding the words “per meeting” to clarify that a member of the public can comment on the same subject at multiple meetings, just not multiple times during one meeting.
Pennsylvania School Board Association Service Awards were given to board members Dr. Annette Giovengo Nolish (eight years) and Kathy Reid (12 years), who bothattended their last meeting as board members that evening.
The next school board meeting will be held on Dec. 7.
