North Hills High School teacher Michelle Medic wanted her SADD (Students Against Destructive Decisions) and officials to come up with an idea for a new charity event this year that enabled them to give back to the North Hills community.

And they did.

“They came up with this prom (dress) resale idea,” Medic said. “We’ve never done it here at North Hills High School, and we haven’t seen it being done around (the area). So, we said, ‘Why not go for this?’”

Today, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. in the school cafeteria, more than 350 donated prom dresses, and semi-formal (homecoming dresses) — some worn, some not — will go on sale for $20 each.

“There are some steals. We have some dresses that still have tags,” Medic said. “I’ve had some dresses donated (by people) who said, ‘I paid $600 for this dress and it’s been sitting in the closet.’

“We have fitting rooms, we’re going to have a whole photo area. So the whole idea is copying from the show ‘Say Yes to the Dress.’ So, students can take pictures and hold up a sign that says, ‘I said yes to the dress.’”

Medic said all the money the event brings in will go to North Hills Cares, a charity that provides support for needy families in the North Hills

Today’s event will include music and food.

“We want to make this a festive event to hopefully find the dress of your dreams,” she said. “We can’t believe the dresses that we got — just beautiful dresses.”

Come and get ‘em

Medic said they have received so many dresses that they have opened up the sale to people from outside the North Hills community.

“Anybody is welcome to come to this event. They don’t have to be a North Hills student,” she said.

Some of the SADD club students produced a video to promote the event https://youtu.be/Hb23yz5cFDo.

The North Hills High School prom is scheduled for May 13.
