A portion of Route 51 was closed Wednesday afternoon because of an oil spill.

Route 51 is reopend after an oil spill closed it down in both directions between Stanford Court and Coraopolis Road in Kennedy Township late Wednesday afternoon.

Neither PennDOT officials nor Kennedy Township Police contacted by the Trib could identify the source of the spill.

PennDOT announced at about 10:30 p.m. that the road was completely reopen in both directions. An hour earlier, one lane of alternating traffic had opened in the area of the spill.

Motorists were advised to consider alternate routes. A PennDOT spokeswoman said the oil spill covered a 250-foot area.
