It took two meetings and half a dozen roll call votes, but Pine’s board of supervisors have elected a chairman.

Supervisor Michael Dennehy was re-elected unanimously to a one-year term in the leadership position during the Jan. 20 board meeting.

Dennehy began serving on the board in 2000 and has been chairman since 2007.

The board failed four attempts to elect a chairman during its Jan. 4 reorganization meeting, at which only four of the five supervisors were present.

Dennehy was nominated to the position during that meeting but the motion failed to be seconded and no vote was cast.

A motion also was made by supervisor Ryan Colombo to appoint supervisor Pat Avolio as chairman, but it, too, failed to get a second, as did a motion by Avolio to appoint Colombo as chairman.

The final attempt to select a chairman during the Jan. 4 meeting ended with a motion by Avolio to appoint Holdcroft to the post, who declined the nomination, causing that motion to fail.

The board did, however, vote unanimously that night to appoint Dennehy to replace Holdcoft as vice-chairman.

The Jan. 21 meeting began with a fifth failed attempt to name a chairman.

A motion by Colombo to appoint Avolio as chairman was defeated by a vote of 3-2, with Dennehy, Holdcroft and Jack Donahue casting the dissenting votes.

Donahue then made a motion, seconded by Holdcroft, to again nominate Dennehy as the chair and he was elected unanimously.

Dennehy resigned his short-lived position as vice-chairman. The position was by Avolio, who also received unanimous consent from the board.

The board chair presides over supervisors’ meetings and often serves as the lead contact person for the five members. The vice-chair serves when the chair is absent.
