UPDATE (10:15 a.m. Saturday): PennDOT officials announced Saturday morning that this weekend’s work has been completed ahead of schedule, and the Parkway East has fully reopened to traffic in the work zone.

Work on a nearly 5-mile stretch of the Parkway East will mean reducing highway traffic to a single lane June 7-9 as crews undertake rehabilitation work on several bridges and ramps.

The Parkway East in Churchill, Wilkins, Penn Hills and Monroeville will be down to a single lane as work takes place between the Monroeville and Churchill exits.

Crews will reconstruct concrete bridge approach slabs.

The work is part of the overall $70 million I-376 Parkway East Betterment Project, which includes superstructure replacement over Old William Penn Highway, two bridge rehabilitations that carry the Parkway over Old William Penn and Lougeay roads, and six bridge preservations along the highway.

Of the 15 bridges that carry the Parkway East through those communities, only one is rated as “good” by PennDOT – the bridge carrying the highway over, and then merging into, eastbound Route 22.

Thirteen of the bridges are rated as “fair,” PennDOT’s second-highest condition status. Only one, the bridge carrying the Parkway over Old William Penn Highway near Monroeville’s Garden City neighborhood, is rated as “poor.” PennDOT data indicates more than 52,000 vehicles travel the bridge daily.

PennDOT officials said drivers can expect long-term single-lane restrictions, as well as several weekends where highway traffic is reduced to single lane, during the course of the project.

A long-term crossover is also planned during the project’s 2025 phase. It is expected to be fully complete in the fall of 2026.
