Expected snowfall prompts Penn Hills School District to move online Tuesday
Penn Hills School District will shift to remote learning Tuesday because of forecasted snowfall.
The National Weather Service in Pittsburgh has called for 2 to 4 inches of snow in the area Tuesday. A winter weather advisory in the region runs from 1 a.m. Tuesday to 7 a.m. Wednesday.
The school district has implemented a hybrid learning model since the beginning of the school year. That means groups of students take turns going to school two days per week. All students engage in remote learning on Wednesdays, when school buildings are cleaned and sanitized.
Staff, except those who work in the food services department, will have the choice to work from home exclusively on Tuesday or to work a portion of the day onsite, according to an announcement on the district’s website.
Extracurricular activities scheduled for Tuesday will still be held, depending on weather conditions, wrote Nancy Hines, the district’s superintendent.
Elementary students will continue remote learning Thursday and Friday because of staff absences. Hines said some of those staff have been recommended to quarantine after exposure to covid-19.
The school district has had a total of 24 covid-19 cases since March, according to an announcement on the district’s website published Nov. 20.
In-person learning will continue for high school and middle school students on Thursday and Friday, Hines said.
The forecast high temperature for Tuesday is 33 degrees, and 35 for Wednesday. It will be slightly warmer on Thursday and Friday, with high temperatures in the 40s.
