Mental Wellness & Suicide Prevention Day
SAFE Task Force and Penn Hills School District are teaming up for Mental Wellness & Suicide Prevention Day from 1-4:30 p.m. May 7. The free community event will take place at Penn Hills High School and feature a panel discussion with former University of Pittsburgh football player Tre Tipton, a free lunch, artwork and soul line dancing.
Penn Hills Shade Tree Commission
In celebration of Arbor Day, the Penn Hills Shade Tree Commission and volunteers will be planting trees and fencing them from the deer in Turner Friendship Park, 1340 Hunter Road, from 2 to 4 p.m. May 7. Water, coffee and donuts will be provided. Please join us and bring a shovel! Rain date is May 14.
TOPS meetings
TOPS (Take Off Pounds Sensibly) local chapter meets each Tuesday evening at 6 p.m. for an interactive program focused on various aspects of a healthy lifestyle at Oakmont United Methodist Church, 419 Maryland Ave. in Oakmont.
TOPS is a nonprofit, weight-loss support and wellness education organization. It promotes successful, affordable weight management with a philosophy that combines: healthy eating, regular exercise and wellness. Visitors are welcome to attend their first TOPS meeting free of charge on any Tuesday. Local monthly dues are $5.
AARP meeting
Plum AARP chapter will hold its monthly meeting at noon May 10 at Unity Community Church, 215 Unity Trestle Road. The program for the day will be the Speez-Acts, an entertaining balancing, juggling and rhythmic dance act. Cake and coffee/tea will be served. The group is looking for more people to fill a bus trip to Lancaster to see “David” in either June or July. More info will be offered at the meeting. The entertainment for the June 14 meeting will be the popular G Boys, who will perform classic oldies.
Plum AARP is a social and service group open to residents of Plum, Penn Hills, New Kensington, Monroeville and the surrounding communities. The group meets at noon on the second Tuesday of each month, September through June at Unity Community Church.
Newcomers are always welcome. Dues are only $10 per year. For this fee, the chapter offers free cake or pie and coffee or tea, an informative or entertaining program each month, and a chance to attend a Christmas party, spring luncheon and August social. Sign-up for day or overnight trips also is offered. Take this opportunity to make new friends and enjoy stimulating programs.

Freemasonry history program
A lecture on the history of Freemasonry and the profound influence it has had on local places, names and customs, from the French and Indian War to our modern-day — including in Penn Hills — will take place at 7 p.m. May 6 at Penn Hills Masonic Center on Saltsburg Road. After the lecture, attendees are welcome to get a tour of the lodge room.
