Musical Alumni Night
Started by Class of 2003 musical theater students Heather Lubay Broderick, Joe Nickel, Nicolette Chilton-Spudic, Lacy Brooks, and Tiffany Murdy Sozynski, Penn Hills Musical Alumni have come together since 2018 to celebrate and enjoy a long-standing Penn Hills tradition of the spring musical.
In 2019, they added a fundraising mission to their efforts as a way to give back to the cast and crew. This year, they look to continue the tradition of supporting the current cast by attending the show and offering a scholarship to students as they prepare for life after high school. To date, a total of five scholarships went to graduating seniors involved in the musicals and could be used to continue their educational activities, whether related to theater or not.
“We all had been volunteering with the musical and wanted to find a way to bring together a small portion of the hundreds of people that had spent time on the Penn Hills stage over the 60-plus years that Penn Hills has been putting on musicals and theater productions,” Chilton-Spudic said. “We created a Facebook group to connect with other musical alumni and as a way to communicate. The group also holds a yearly event where we encourage all musical alumni to attend the show on the same night.”
Alumni meet onstage before the show, get a backstage tour and have the opportunity to warm up with the cast.
Now, with more than 370 members on their Facebook page, they come together every year to raise money via donations for the students participating in the musical. The group even had the opportunity to provide two scholarships in 2020, despite the show being canceled.
This year, the group will reunite and attend the spring production of “Little Women” on April 30 and enthusiastically encourage any and all musical alumni to join at 6:45 p.m. for a meet-and-greet on the stage.

Freemasonry history program
A lecture on the history of Freemasonry and the profound influence it has had on local places, names and customs, from the French and Indian War to our modern-day – including in Penn Hills – will take place at 7 p.m. May 6 at Penn Hills Masonic Center on Saltsburg Road. After the lecture, attendees are welcome to get a tour of the lodge room.
