Rotary scholarship
The Bob Williams Rotary Memorial Scholarship Program announces the availability of scholarships for the 2023-24 academic year. In recent years, at least eight scholarships of $5,000 each have been awarded. High school seniors in Allegheny and Beaver counties are eligible to apply. Vocational students, GED students and those attending parochial, charter and private schools are also eligible.
Students must have a 2.5 or higher grade point average and must complete an essay that highlights their community/school service as part of the application submission.
Complete application and criteria materials, including the application deadline, are available on the Rotary District 7305 website, Scholarship Link, or from area high school counselors. For more information, contact Dr. Robert Arbuckle at rarbuckl@yahoo.com.
Fall leaf collection
Penn Hills will collect leaves, garden residue (flowers and plants with no roots attached), and shrubbery and tree trimmings less than a half-inch in diameter (no roots).
Paper bags should be placed curbside on Sunday night prior to Dec. 4. The items can also be dropped off at the compost site by appointment with public works, 412-798-2151.
Holiday light display
Penn Hills will hold a holiday light display at the Penn Hills Government Center from 6:30-7:30 p.m. Nov. 30.
Drive through the parking lot to see the lights, Santa, Rudolph, the elves and more. Registration is required for a free treat bag for each child by calling 412-798-2147 by Nov. 27.
Bring an unopened, unwrapped toy to donate to the Stuff-A-Truck Toy Fundraiser and a chance to win a $100 Visa gift card.
Paint & Sip
The Myasthenia Gravis Association of Western PA will host its fourth annual Virtual Holiday Paint & Sip Celebration on Dec. 7. The event will benefit MGA’s free patient support services.
For a $50 donation, participants will receive a link to participate, the supplies needed to create a snowflake-inspired painting, and two bottles from Kavic Winery in Carnegie. The paint session will be led by art therapist Kristy Walter. For an additional fee, participants can take part in a Christmas cookie exchange and virtual reindeer races. For more information, or to purchase tickets, email mgaoffice@mgawpa.org or call 412-566-1545.
PALS
Plum Area Ladies Society will celebrate the holidays at the Dec.6 meeting at the Plum Community Center, beginning at 6:30 p.m. The service project is to donate new warm hats, gloves and scarves for the homeless. Members participating in the gift exchange should bring a $15 wrapped gift. The refreshment team will bring hors d’oeuvres and desserts to celebrate the occasion.
For Ladies Day Out, members will be taking a guided tour of Kerr’s Museum House Victorian Christmas in Oakmont at noon Dec. 9. Following the tour, the ladies will lunch at the Village Inn in Verona. Sign-up will be at the meeting.
PALS is a service/social organization open to women in Plum, Penn Hills, Verona, Monroeville and surrounding communities. Newcomers are welcome to come to a meeting, always held at Plum Community Center at 6:30 on the first Wednesday of each month, September through April.
