News briefs: Leaf collection program announced in Penn Hills

Penn Hills residents cannot rake leaves to the curb as seen in this photo. The leaves must be in paper bags and cannot weigh more than 30 pounds.

The municipality is offering curbside leaf pickup dates beginning min November.

Starting Nov. 2, Penn Hills Public Works will pick up paper bags left at the curb every Monday. The last date is Dec. 7.

According to the municipality’s rules, the paper bags must not weigh more than 30 pounds, and they must not be taped or filled with anything other than leaves. By ordinance, leaves cannot be raked into a pile and left by the curb in Penn Hills.

Bags can also be dropped off at a compost site by making an appointment. Call 412-798-2151 for more information.

Flu shots available

Penn Hills Emergency Management Services is hosting and co-sponsoring a drive-thru flu shot event from 1 to 5 p.m. on Nov. 8 at 102 Duff Road. Participants must wear masks, short-sleeved shirts, show a valid insurance card and be at least 18 years of age.

There is no out-of-pocket expense. Rite Aid, a sponsor of the event, will bill insurance companies.

If participants do not have insurance, the flu shot will be administered at no cost by UPMC McKeesport Hospital Foundation.

The event’s supplies are available on a first-come, first-served basis.
