The See The Best In Me Awards represent individuals that have a made a difference in their community. Sandra Barker, principal at Linton Middle School, was recently recognized by Gwen’s Girls with the honor.
Barker has worked for the Penn Hills School District since 1998. Over the past four years, Barker and her administrative team have been very successful in creating a more positive learning environment at Linton. The many challenges at Linton did not deter her as she worked with educators to implement new programs at the school, such as culturally diverse books added to the ELA program, double periods of ELA and mathematics, and a new mathematics program that promotes student centered activities and hands on learning. These implementations were put in place with the assistance of Renel Williams, director of teaching, learning, and assessment.
Barker worked closely with district superintendent Dr. Nancy Hines at Linton to implement a YESS Team, replacing the security guards. The YESS team works closely with Barker to implement practices that build positive relationships and work with students who struggle in the school environment. They also implemented a New Directions room and disassembled the old in school suspension room.
