Gibsonia residents Albert and Thelma Weigand celebrated 65 years of marriage on Feb. 11.

The couple was introduced to each other by Thelma’s friend, Gerry Bly, on Christmas Day in 1956. They got engaged in August of 1957 and married on Feb. 11, 1958.

Albert worked at several places when they were first married and then found steady work in 1964 at Ugite Gas company. In 1973, Albert and Thelma started Weigand Contracting, Inc., which is still in operation today. Albert worked on the jobs during the day and met with perspective customers at night. Thelma did the bookkeeping and payroll off of their kitchen table until they opened their showroom in 1984 on Route 8 in Middlesex Twp.

They raised their children in Gibsonia, remodeling and expanding an existing home they purchased. Once the last of the children moved out, they built their dream home just a few miles away, where they still live today. Gibsonia is special to them because they have made many close friends, they still have many children and grandchildren that live nearby and they can continue to stay active in their church, Saints Martha and Mary, (St. Richard’s Parish) where they have been longtime members.

Today they are retired and enjoy their hobbies. Albert does woodworking and cares for his lawn, while Thelma quilts and continues playing cards with her card club. Their greatest joy is spending time with their family and friends.

The couple have eight children: Albert Jr. (Chris), George (Christine), Michael (Liz), Andy (Dona), David (Jackie), Patty (Tim Bittle), Larry (Carol) and Wayne (Angie).

They also have 22 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren, with two more on the way.
