Leticia Harshman’s 10th grade honors English class hosted its annual poetry jam in honor of National Poetry Month on April 27. Students performed dramatic readings of poems and songs ranging from Shel Silverstein to Taylor Swift in front of other invited classes. The special one-day event was emceed by sophomores Crew Fenton and Blake Fuchs and featured special guest Rammy and a three-person band. The Honors English 10 poetry unit challenges students to publicly demonstrate their understanding of poetry through performance, helping them to acquire critical thinking skills via verbal and non-verbal communication, problem solving, cooperative learning, communication and evaluation, and reflection and synthesis. The Poetry Jam is designed to help students visualize poetry as performance on paper, view poetry as important, see poetry as art and learn that songs are a form of poetry.
Pine-Richland High School sophomore Braden Fischer recently earned the rank of Eagle Scout. For his project, Fischer was inspired by the idea of paying it forward. He aimed to help 100 people, thinking that those 100 people could someday pay it forward and help another 100. Fischer chose to work with Inspired Hearts and Hands to help with food storage and donations. He constructed a metal storage cabinet for the organization to store donated food, sought donations from the community and led his troop in assembling boxes of food for 67 families that included a $10 Aldi gift card and 15 non-perishable food items per box. He also led his troop to deliver the food in time for Thanksgiving. Fischer has been involved with scouting since he was 7, first as a Cub Scout with Pack 179 and BSA Scout with Troop 150.
Caroline Radocaj was recently initiated into The Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi, the nation’s oldest and most selective all-discipline collegiate honor society. Radocaj was initiated at Pennsylvania State University.
