Alek Johnson of Gibsonia was among more than 30 students who received recent recognition for achievements at Baldwin Wallace University. Each spring, BW recognizes student achievement with a variety of scholarships, prizes and awards for excellence in academics, athletics, service and leadership.
Johnson, who is majoring in engineering, received the Kent and Shirley R. Williams Engineering and Pre-Engineering Scholarship. The driving force behind the establishment of this endowed scholarship is the desire of Kent and Shirley R. Williams to support students who are pursuing engineering at Baldwin Wallace University.
Christopher Galbraith of Gibsonia graduated from Slippery Rock University on May 7. A dual accounting and corporate security major, he participated in the ceremony as a student marshal/flag bearer representing the university’s College of Business.
The University of Mount Union hosted its annual Student Celebration Honoring Our Latest Academic Research (SCHOLAR) Day. SCHOLAR Day is traditionally a campus-wide, day-long event filled with presentations showcasing academic excellence and scholarly research conducted by Mount Union students. Brett Scheib of Gibsonia was selected to give a poster presentation titled “Detection of Radioactive Strontium-90 Sources in a Mock Patient Body.”
John Hoffman Jr. of Wexford was recently initiated into The Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi, the nation’s oldest and most selective all-discipline collegiate honor society. Hoffman was initiated at the University of Maryland Global Campus.
Hoffman is among approximately 25,000 students, faculty, professional staff and alumni to be initiated into Phi Kappa Phi each year. Membership is by invitation only and requires nomination and approval by a chapter. Only the top 10 percent of seniors and 7.5 percent of juniors are eligible for membership. Graduate students in the top 10 percent of the number of candidates for graduate degrees may also qualify, as do faculty, professional staff and alumni who have achieved scholarly distinction.
