Sixteen Pine-Richland High School seniors were named Commended by the 2023 National Merit Scholarship program:
Matthew Andersen, Joseph D. Derenzo, Jack Duckworth, Jack J. Exline, Adam Kirsch, Avinash Kottakota, Nolan Martin, Sreyashi Mondal, Anjaly Palathunkal, Javin Parker, Elaine Qian, Elizabeth Shaffer, Benjamin Tamburri, John Varghese, Alexander Vasile and Colin Zvejnieks.
About 34,000 Commended students throughout the nation are being recognized for their exceptional academic promise. Although they will not continue in the 2023 competition for National Merit Scholarship awards, Commended students placed among the top 50,000 students who entered the 2023 competition by taking the 2021 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT).
Pine-Richland head football coach Jon LeDonne was named High School Coach of the Week by the Pittsburgh Steelers for the team’s victory over North Allegheny on Sept. 30. Pine-Richland won with a score of 28-17, North Allegheny’s first loss of the season.
The Pittsburgh Steelers select a High School Coach of the Week each week during high school football season. Coach of the Week winners are invited to be honored at a Steelers home game and receive a framed certificate signed by NFL commissioner Roger Goodell and headcoach Mike Tomlin, a Steelers Coach of the Week cap and a $1,000 donation to their football program. LeDonne also received Coach of the Week honors in 2018 when he was head coach at Penn Hills.
