Animal Friends vet offers telemedicine for pets of low-income owners
Animal Friends is offering telephone appointments with a vet for low-income residents who have concerns about their pet’s health.
“During this challenging and uncertain time, struggling pet owners may have concerns and having access to a veterinarian over the phone can help to determine whether they need to seek medical attention,” said Cody Hoellerman, a spokesman for Animal Friends in Ohio Township.
Some veterinarians are offering just emergency or limited services due to covid-19 restrictions and concerns. It’s a difficult time for pet owners to know if an animal’s condition warrants a vet visit or more, he said.
Animal Friends is trying to fill the niche of helping financially distressed pet owners figure out the best course of treatment for their pets. They already offer a number of clinics to spay and neuter pets as well as other services at a low cost for low-income residents.
“Through our new telemedicine resource, I can help them determine if they can manage the issue at home or if it requires a trip to a vet clinic,” said Dr. Amanda Zetwo, Animal Friends’ medical director of clinic and community services.
Telemedicine appointments could be helpful if pets are coughing, sneezing for more than one day, bleeding, urinating and drinking more, vomiting or increasing incidences of diarrhea, breathing problems and bloating.
There is no charge for the service. Pet owners will be asked to make donation to support Animal Friends.
