Answering the Call: Giving birth during coronavirus crisis

People usually aren’t excited about going to the hospital. But when families show up to have a baby, it often ends up being one of the best moments of their lives.

With covid-19, things are different. At UPMC Magee-Womens Hospital, patients giving birth can only have one support person with them, which means grandparents and siblings can’t come to the hospital to meet the newest member of their family.

In this edition of the Trib’s Answering the Call, Lindsay Kennedy, director of Magee’s labor and delivery unit, talks about how nurses are stepping up to support mothers who may feel a lack of support because of the visitor restrictions. Kennedy, who is 6 months pregnant herself, discusses what it’s like to be pregnant and working at a hospital in these challenging times.
