Monroeville’s chief of police said detectives were close to making arrests after they say at least one person fired as many as 10 bullets into a mall store entrance.

“We have leads, and we’ll most likely make an arrest,” Chief Doug Cole said. “We just need to put some names to the videos.”

Cole said three detectives pored over outdoor and indoor surveillance footage in the days following a shooting that damaged glass doors and an indoor refrigerator at the Monroeville Mall Macy’s Backstage first-floor entrance. The shooting led to the mall’s evacuation about 8 p.m. April 12. There were no reports of injuries, Cole said.

The police chief said two groups of men were in an altercation toward the center of the mall that progressed to Macy’s Backstage store. One group moved outside while the other stayed inside. One person from the outside group used a handgun to fire into the mall.

Cole said there were four or five young men in each group. From watching video surveillance footage, Cole said police know what occurred.

“But we want to get people interviewed and generate why it occurred. What exactly went down, we know. What it was about, we’re not sure,” he said. He expects more than one arrest after that happens.

“At this point, we’re not sure that they all have criminal culpability,” Cole said of the men involved in the altercation.

The mall was evacuated after the shooting but was open for regular business hours the next day with a heavier police presence. Wooden boards had been placed over the shot-up doors.

On the morning after the shooting, mall shoppers had mixed feelings about the shooting. Some were not aware of the shooting, while others were aware but did not feel unsafe — at least during daylight hours.

“All I have to say is: That this is the best time to shop because the police are here,” said Marianne Turkal, 74, of Weirton, W.Va.

The mall did not respond to a request for comment.
