Carleton Young holds the wooden box he discovered in his parents’ attic, filled with Civil War-era letters from two distant relatives.

These two scans of Civil War-era letters show the Martin brothers’ penmanship as well as their "cross-writing," where a filled page was turned 90 degrees and another set of sentences was written on top. Young said it made the letters especially difficult to transcribe.
