With temperatures hovering in the teens Tuesday morning, the construction of a 1,000 square-foot ice house in the middle of Market Square seemed only appropriate.

For the fifth year, Dollar Energy Fund will host the “Cool Down for Warmth” on Thursday and Friday. The event aims to raise awareness and money for those in the region who are at risk of a utility service termination. Dollar Energy Fund provides utility assistance to limited-income households.

During the “Cool Down for Warmth” event, people are invited to tour the multi-room ice house, which includes a kitchen and living room with appliances carved from ice, as well as a garage. The house was built by workers from Mastro Gourmet Ice through sponsorships from UPMC, Citizens Bank, Comcast, Dormont Appliance and Dunkin’ Donuts.

Returning for this year’s event will be the Bowls for Warmth Soup Tasting, which will take place from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. each day. For a $10 donation, customers will receive a cup of soup from a local restaurant and a bottle of water. In addition, there will be coupons and giveaways each day.

Donation boxes will be set up during the “Cool Down for Warmth” for those wishing to support local families in need. Since beginning in 2015, the event has raised $683,000 for more than 1,900 area households.
