The CVS Pharmacy in Monroeville, at 3893 William Penn Highway, will provide covid-19 testing to eligible individuals starting May 23.

The health care and pharmacy company CVS Health will expand its covid-19 testing in Pennsylvania, adding 27 additional sites to pharmacies across the state and seven in Allegheny County, the company announced Thursday.

CVS began testing for the new coronavirus on May 15 at drive-thru sites in Pennsylvania.

The expansion, effective May 22, brings the state’s testing sites to a total of 36 and includes CVS pharmacies in Monroeville, Mt. Lebanon, New Castle, Cranberry, Pittsburgh and McKees Rocks.

In Allegheny County, the new testing sites include the following:

• 1181 Freedom Road, Cranberry Township, PA 16066

• 5703 Steubenville Pike, McKees Rocks, PA 15136

• 3893 William Penn Highway, Monroeville, PA 15146

• 328 Cochran Road, Mt. Lebanon, PA 15228

• 734 East Washington Street, New Castle, PA 16101

• 1740 Washington Road, Pittsburgh, PA 15241

• 4664 Browns Hill Road, Pittsburgh, PA 15217

The new testing sites will be self-administered swab tests and will occur outside the stores, CVS said in a news release.

CVS Health has around 350 test sites in 14 states.

“As we move into a new phase of combating the pandemic and as communities begin to safely open up their local economies, we need testing to be easily accessible,” said Chief Medical Officer and Executive Vice President of CVS Health Troyen Brennan. “By further expanding the number of drive-thru test sites available across our retail network, more people can be tested closer to home in a familiar setting.”

The company has pledged to open 1,000 testing sites across the U.S. by the end of May and wants to process up to 1.5 million tests each month, the company’s news release said.

CVS said those sites will be in communities hardest hit by covid-19, as measured by the CDC’s Social Vulnerability Index. The index tracks census information including poverty, lack of access to transportation and crowded housing. CVS said those SVI variables “may weaken a community’s ability to prepare for and recover from hazardous events like natural disasters and disease outbreaks.”

Those wanting free tests must meet CDC criteria and age guidelines. Patients must also register in advance here starting May 22.

Patients will drive up to the pharmacy’s drive-thru window, where a pharmacist will give them a test kit and instructions. The pharmacist will observe the test and send them to an independent lab for processing. CVS said the results will be available in about three days.
