Fans from across the world celebrate life of Mac Miller at Pittsburgh's Blue Slide Park
Hundreds of fans from across the world came together Friday for a celebration of the life of rapper and Pittsburgh native Mac Miller nearly one year after his death.
Frick Park’s Blue Slide Park playground, which was made famous by Miller’s album and song of the same name, was filled with people dancing and rapping to Miller’s songs as they blared from speakers set up inside the playground. Blue roses and fan artwork were placed in a makeshift memorial nearby.
Miller, whose birth name is Malcolm James McCormick, was found unresponsive in his Los Angeles home shortly before noon on Sept. 7, 2018. He was pronounced dead a short time later.
A Los Angeles man was arrested Wednesday on charges that he sold counterfeit opioid pills to Miller two days before Miller died of an overdose, according to The Associated Press.
Miller was 26. He grew up in Pittsburgh’s Point Breeze neighborhood and graduated from Allderdice High School in Squirrel Hill.
Friday’s event at Blue Slide Park was organized by The Mac Miller Memoir, started by the trio of Marc Andre Lauzon and Cody Lee, both of Montreal, Canada, and Zach DiMartini of Shaler. The three met via social media as fans of Miller’s.
What started as three fans has grown to 70,000 followers on social media.
