Half-mile section of Hulton Road near Plum, Penn Hills set for longterm closure

A half-mile section of Hulton Road near the Plum and Penn Hills border will close until mid-November to allow crews to repair damaged by a landslide, PennDOT said Friday.
Work on the $3.4 million project between Iowa Street and Michael Drive will start at 9 a.m. on July 1, depending on weather. Traffic will be detoured.
Drivers starting north of the slide and trying to get south of it are advised to take Coxcomb Hill Road, make a right on Logan’s Ferry Road, a right on Leechburg Road and then go right back onto Hulton Road.
That detour is the exact reverse for drivers going the other direction.
A landslide occurred in February 2018 and the road has been reduced to one lane since.
The project, dubbed the Hulton Road Slope Stability Project, includes 700 feet of reconstruction on the road and shoulder along the embankment and the installation of a retaining wall.
Steve Cowan, a PennDOT spokesman, has said the project will be covered by a combination of state emergency and PennDOT funding.
The landslide was one of 85 in Allegheny, Beaver and Lawrence counties occurring last spring. In Allegheny County alone, several slides caused nearly $22 million in damages.
Charles J. Merlo Inc. of Mineral Point, Penn. is the contractor. Other work on the road will include paving, drainage improvements, guide rail updates, pavement markings and other miscellaneous construction.
