Kindergartner caught with gun at Pittsburgh Allegheny school

A kindergarten student brought a gun to Pittsburgh Allegheny K-5 School on Friday, Pittsburgh Public Schools officials said.
The gun was discovered when a staff member searched a student’s backpack at the North Side school after the student went through the school’s metal detector.
Police were notified, and the incident is being investigated.
District spokeswoman Ebony Pugh said the student would be disciplined for bringing a weapon into the school. She said she could not elaborate on what that discipline would be.
The student told school officials how the gun was obtained, Pugh said, but those details could not yet be released. She also could not release information about the kind of gun it was and whether the gun was loaded.
“Of course it’s a concern that such a young student would be able to have access to a weapon,” Pugh said.
“We’re fortunate that our systems work,” she continued. “The systems we have in place to ensure that weapons aren’t getting into our building work and the firearm did not get into the classroom.”
