Marshall postal facility to reopen

Nearly two weeks after a mercury spill, the U.S. Postal Service’s Pittsburgh Network Distribution Center will resume daily operations Friday.
The Marshall facility has been closed since March 24, after receiving an “improperly mailed package containing mercury,” said a postal service press release.
According to the state Department of Environmental Protection, a small amount of mercury spilled over a conveyor belt. The Postal Service diverted mail to other mail processing facilities in the surrounding area.
Postal management worked with professional environmental contractors and the DEP to properly clean up and dispose of the mercury.
“We apologize to customers who may have experienced temporary service issues and assure them that we continue to make progress every day toward restoring normal operations,” postal officials said in a statement.
