The UPMC Health Plan Pittsburgh Half Marathon is less than three months away and organizers want to jump-start runners’ 12-week training.

A free event featuring runs of several distances at various pace options is being held on Saturday at the UPMC Rooney Sports Complex on the city’s South Side. It is hosted by the nonprofit organization P3R and the Steel City Road Runners running club.

“It’s a fun way for everyone in Pittsburgh to gear up and get excited. The event is for people to come on out and celebrate kick-starting their training and get excited for the half-marathon,” said Jane Sheerer, P3R communications coordinator.

Check-in begins at 7 a.m. with an 8:15 a.m. warm-up and the run following at 8:30 a.m. Post-race refreshments will be provided.

“This is time of year when people start to take on their training miles,” Sheerer said. “Twelve weeks is a decent amount of time to get ready for a half-marathon. So if you’re coming out and running the four miles with us, you can definitely get half-marathon ready for May.”

Sheerer said between 300 and 500 runners are expected for Saturday’s event. Close to 9,000 runners have registered for the Pittsburgh Half Marathon scheduled for May 3.

Steel City Road Runners will continue to hold group training runs on Thursdays and Saturdays leading up to the half-marathon.
