Point Park University announced Monday that it would begin a national search for a new provost.

“We are seeking a candidate with a strong record as a teacher and scholar, combined with a successful record of increasing responsible academic leadership and administrative experience,” President Paul Hennigan said in a statement. “This is a time of change, and we need a leader that can articulate and advance the university’s vision and strategy with energy, passion and decisiveness.”

The new provost would begin work in early summer 2021. The current provost, John H. Pearson, has held the role since 2016. He recently announced he would retire. Prior to coming to Point Park, Pearson worked as associate vice president of academic affairs at Stetson University in DeLand, Fla.

“John is a passionate educator who has left an indelible mark on Point Park with his leadership and guidance,” Hennigan said. “We hope to find someone who shares John’s value of collaborative work based on shared governance, community engagement and fiscal management.”

Point Park spokesman Lou Corsaro said Pearson will continue working as provost through the upcoming school year. He said it’s unlikely the university will bring in any candidates for interviews until late October or early November, so the covid-19 pandemic may not cause any disruption to the hiring process.
