Teen killed, others injured in South Fayette train crash

A teenage girl was killed and two others were hurt Wednesday, after they were struck by a train in South Fayette.
The crash happened near the intersection of Wabash Avenue and Millers Run Road, according to a news release from Allegheny County police. The teenagers were walking across an elevated train trestle around 11 a.m. when they were hit.
Allegheny County Medical Examiner’s Office identified the victim as Julianna Gennaro, 15, of the Morgan section of South Fayette.

First responders found Gennaro dead, police said.
A 17-year-old girl was also taken to an area hospital. She is expected to survive.
Officials told Tribune-Review news partner WPXI that another girl was able to jump over and hold onto the trestle until the train passed.
Detectives said they are interviewing several witnesses of the incident, including three teens who were with the victim during the incident.
South Fayette Township School District Superintendent Kenneth Lockette posted a letter on the district’s website about the loss of the student.
“With heavy hearts, we know that this loss will raise many emotions, concerns, and questions for our entire community, especially our students and staff,” Lockette wrote. “We are deeply saddened by the loss to our school community and will make every effort to help you and your child or children through this difficult time. Our thoughts and prayers are with the family.”
The district has a crisis intervention team and counselors available for students.
