Authorities were surprised to learn that a woman involved in a crash along Broadway Boulevard on Nov. 4 died four days later in the hospital.
Nicole Hilla, 41, died Nov. 8 at Forbes Hospital while being treated for injuries she got in a crash along the 2800 block of Broadway Boulevard on Nov. 4, according to an Allegheny County Medical Examiner’s report.
Monroeville Police Chief Doug Cole, who did not respond to the scene of the crash, said the initial crash report said Hilla received “minor abrasions to the mouth and nose” and that she was not wearing a seat belt.
“This is something we didn’t expect to be a fatal crash,” he said. “And we’re pretty confident in our assessment of what occurred.”
The crash is under investigation, but he said one of the vehicles crossed over into oncoming traffic, causing a head-on collision. He said the crash did not seem suspicious.
Cole said he was uncertain if speed was a factor. He also said the police department is waiting on medical reports that would show if either driver was impaired.
“I would be careful to report that the crash caused her death. There may have been other medical reasons,” he said.
Jennifer Oberman, 42, of Swissvale, drove the other vehicle. She was also transported to Forbes Hospital but was later transferred to UPMC Mercy “for insurance reasons,” said Cole.
“She had lacerations to her lower extremities,” Cole said, adding she complained of lower back pain.
