Police: Woman suffers burns in Carnegie apartment fire
A woman was taken to a Pittsburgh hospital with burns after a fire started in her Carnegie apartment early Monday, officials said.
The fire was reported at 12:30 a.m. at the Honus Wagner Apartments on Third Avenue. People were evacuated from the building, and Port Authority buses were brought in for them to use until they could return to their apartments, Tribune-Review news partner WPXI-TV reported.
Carnegie police Chief Jeff Kennedy said the woman lives on the fourth floor, and police officers were able to get her out of her apartment before firefighters arrived.
She was taken to UPMC Mercy in Pittsburgh’s Uptown, Kennedy said. The extent of her injuries wasn’t immediately known.
“I heard an explosion, and it sounded like somebody … like a whole level just flattened or something, and I thought somebody must’ve fell. Then, the alarm came on about 10 minutes later,” resident Mitzi Osborne told WPXI-TV.
No other injuries were reported, Kennedy said.
Kennedy said damage to the building was limited to the woman’s apartment, but several apartments below hers suffered water damage.
A fire marshal is investigating the cause of the fire.
