Pittsburgh bans parking in bike lanes, with exceptions

Pittsburgh drivers are now barred from parking in bike lanes, with some exceptions.
City Council on Tuesday unanimously passed an ordinance that forbids people from parking in the city’s bike lanes.
Bike lanes are now added to a list of places drivers can’t park — with other areas including crosswalks, sidewalks, railroad tracks, bridges and tunnels.
Pittsburgh police and the city’s parking authority will enforce the law.
The measure includes some exceptions, which were added through amendments passed last week and Tuesday.
There will be an exception for people with disabilities, said Councilman Bobby Wilson, who introduced the measure in late November.
The amendment also established that the director of the Department of Mobility and Infrastructure would be allowed to make additional exceptions. Signs would be posted at those locations detailing the exceptions in place.
City Council members had suggested that some of the city’s churches may need exemptions from the rule, as their congregations use bike lanes to park during Sunday services. Such exemptions could be granted through the Department of Mobility and Infrastructure, officials said.
